New fans are what Star Trek needs to stay alive..and not just a nostaligic afterthought in entertainment history such as Captain Video or Bonanza..
If Trek has to evolve (or de-evolve in some folks opinion) so be it..

If it's not really Trek anymore, Trek really isn't alive.

In any event, TOS will live forever. It just won't be a moneymaker, and that's fine. NuTrek looks to be a moneymaker, and that's great, but it's not Trek, and it's nothing I really care to see.

It most assuredly is, and needless to say is far preferable to the considerable percentage of TOS episodes that were...lamentable.

I think I've come up with a notion that suits me in terms of this new movie.

I think of it as the feature film equivalent of Gold Key Trek comix ...

GK was something I saw a couple pages from and happily turned my back upon, no need for further investing of thought or emotion, and after these trailers and ads, I've certainly had my fill of the new thing.

(and if the story about Geoff Mandel getting fired for hanging an unauthorized sketch of real E and abramsE is true, then I have nothing but distaste for those creatives and execs who flex their muscle in such an appalling fashion. Shameful.)

Well, I'm quite sure what I saw in the movie theatre most certainly was Star Trek. No doubt about that.

But really, I guess I don't really care either way, because in the end it was a very entertaining movie. And entertainment is what this is all about, isn't it?

Neither will I. The new Star Trek is most certainly Star Trek. Maybe not in each person's mind as they so desire, but outside of your own personal opinions on it, it is still Star Trek. People don't have to like it, but that's the way it is.

Regardless of whether one likes the film or not there are enough evident changes from what we know of TOS that it certainly isn't how it could have all begun.

And while it my seem incredibly trivial and shallow to some out there I really hate what they did to the Enterprise. Why couldn't they just tweak a wonderful landmark design in SF hardware rather than conjure a distorted thing that looks like it was drawn by a four year old?

This pretty much sums up my feelings about this movie too. I expect I'd be pretty disappointed after all the things I've already learned about it, including reading the Countdown prequel comic. In fact, the more I find out the more I dread seeing it.

I will say I'd bend some if I scored a pass like CRA did. As is I'll still wait for a download or TV broadcast.

I'm still on the fence about seeing it, but I did pass on a free ticket yesterday, so I expect I'll do what I did for Nemesis and just wait for the home video release.

I've loved the original Star Trek for 40 years. For me, no other series or movie has come close. However, I've eagerly watched each new series' premiere and each movie, with the hope (but little expectation) it would be as good. In the same way, I'm looking forward to the new film. Will it be as good as TOS? Who knows? But I'm a Trekkie, and nothing will keep me from seeing it when it opens here in Japan (at the end of May).

What if I see it and don't like it? Big deal! I can spare a few bucks and a few hours out of my life. (Hell, my wife dragged me to see Beverly Hills Chihuahua, and I survived that.) Seeing it and not liking it is not going to shorten my life or decrease my affection for TOS in any way. In fact, if I see it and don't like it, I can act all superior and be even more smug in my continuing deep appreciation of TOS, but in an informed way. If I like the new movie, then it's good for me too. Win-Win.

And if some people are overly enthusiastic about the new movie and rub me the wrong way? Again, big deal! Some of you TOS fans already annoy the hell out of me!!!

Sure! I'm glad you liked it.

I'm picky when it comes to my movies, science fiction in particular. From the spoilers, it seems there is no science in the movie at all, and not much consistency. I also can't stand shaky cam and lens flares. So there's just not much there for me.

But that's just me.

It's not in the same continuity, certainly not in the same spirit as TOS. How could it be? It's 40 years later and it's a reboot. It's a new Trek and it'll get a lot of new fans.

And that's fine! Enjoy the movie. Enjoy the sequels. Enjoy the spinoffs. Write the spinoffs!

When it comes to SF and, particularly, to Trek, I'm actually less picky. I'm endlessly optimistic and will watch almost anything, at least once. I tend to be more picky (and more frugal with my time, money, and attention) with genre that I don't particularly care for.

Some of the folks here wouldn't have gone w/o a free pass, so they had comments in that context.

I don't see anything from you about what was going to be keeping you out of the theater (because nothing would apparently), and of course your presence also makes Bailey keep climbing the fence and (mis)speaking for others and playing in fields where the mod isn't in his pocket (one hopes anyway.)

Then again that all may fit in your notion of entertainment as well.
