You mean everyday people ages 18-40?
You know beter than that, Garak...
Edit: Besides, we know there's a lot of deliberate agism going on in this stuff. All you have to do is look at the XI forums which pretty much outright say "If you like anything that came out before two or three years ago, you're old and should die off already so we can get to NEW stuff"
I love hearing this argument, mainly because I'm
nineteen.
Besides, the target audience is still a specific group, albeit much larger than Trek's main audience, and has a great deal of overlap with Star Wars and general action-adventure fans.
Really, the only real difference between the target of this film and the other ten films is that the upper management seriously committed to trying something new to get it, which meant adopting a new production and creative staff and a huge PR campaign, which they heavily invested in to overcome the stigma of the last ten being generally inaccessible, self-aggrandizing, and poorly executed in comparison to other films in the genre.
I even admit that TMP was crap in a lot of ways. Sure, it had lots of incredible effects, music score, and well-intended pre-production and production goals, but the writing, direction and general plot leaves much to be desired. Hell,
Andromeda was just as drawn out as TMP, but it interspersed the stretches of mostly visual exposition with
some colorful dialogue and genuinely exciting circumstances, though mostly of the intellectual variety. My attraction to TMP is more of what
could have been as opposed to what was, and any remnants of those intentions keep me drawn to the film, despite having plot holes and bad characterization that would make Jackman do a double-take.
We can have serious issues with the people actually in charge of making the film, but it's not as if TPTB have changed their minds on how they view Trek. To be honest, they're really taken this seriously.
