What's in your wallet?

Yep AMT, and that's when I bought it, at a Convention for, I think, about $20 bucks, maybe less. Good ol' days.

I know some of the model detail is fantastic, I had the movie version of the Enterprise which was also an AMT kit and some of the surface detailing was fantastic they even etched out the windows on the saucer and secondary hull. I'm a bit of an oddball in that with models as long as my assembly is neat and I haven't missed any parts I rarely paint or add extra details. I'm happy to have just put something together well. I did however do the plastic clear parts of the Enterprise before gluing the nacelles together so they did at least look somewhat right. Even back then as a 20 something my eyes were not that great so fine things like painting and detailing were very hard to do even back then. I was pleased I got the nacelle parts to at least look ok despite not painting the rest of the model, did do all the decals with a little help.

Also I love that in the kit instructions they mention adding more bracing to the lower hull so that the engines and pylons don't split open the model when you let it sit for display. You had to make doubly sure that lower hull was glued properly before adding the engines, as they did add weight and downward pressure on the top half of the lower hull. I thought that was bad design on their part making the top off of the lower hull in two pieces instead of one, which would have solved the problem.

I had other model of those times but gave them to fans with kids less fortunate than I was at the time. The sole remaining model I have from those days is the STVI Kronos-1

I too just build a model to my degree of satisfaction. I once got caught up in those surface detailing decal kits, that often cost more than the model they are meant for... but after one go with full aztecking kit, (NX-Excelsior) I said no more. I want my ships to be hands on, not display queens.

I had the ENT-D of those day. I hand painted every window space either white or black with the tip of a toothpick. I recently reproduced that effect on the latest ENT-E release. NOT giving that one away!

There was an amazing Bandai version of the NX01 which had lights and was all snap together. I kick myself now every time I see that kit online because it was an amazing kit but the prices now make it a bit out of reach. Also it was all pre painted only thing you had to do was a couple of decals.

Mine is lighter by $110 for buying two of these. And the price has gone up $4 each since I placed my order.

I had the original full size DS9 model (it was big!) and customized it by gluing my Micro-Machines Defiant onto one of the docking ring ports and the Enterprise-D from a three piece AMT kit onto one of the upper pylons as they were both the right size. While I still have it, but unfortunately it's in storage in several pieces with a few missing ones thanks to the double dilemma of not having enough protected space (meaning in a display case) and cats that like to zip around and jump on things.

The nacelle placement on the TOS Enterprise models were always their Achille's Heel and they'd snap off at the slightest jostle or if it fell and they would be impossible to repair even with superglue. I went through no less than three of the AMT original Enterprises and two of the refit ones since I was a kid. I used the parts of some of them for kitbashing; making a crude TOS transport tug and refit destroyer by attaching the broken engines onto the primary hull, but they all were somehow ultimately thrown away. Considering what these classic kits are going for nowadays (or any model kits for that matter), I can't imagine burning that kind of money on what is a poor model design that won't hold up.

Yep, there are notorious. Fans of the ground based build theory have never dealt with that gravitorial effect, even on these tiny toys. Imaging the full sized nacelle's filled with megatons of warp coils! Not without anti-gravity tech assisting.

One thing to do about drooping nacelle is pre-build support into the struts.

Get some bamboo skewers or thin metal wires or whatever and glue, tape, soder, whatever, as many as will fit without compromising fit anywhere else into a lopsided T shape. The long lopside goes in the nacelle back to the end cap. It is what holds up the rear.

if you can get the chosen support material to extend down into the secondary hull and secure there it will be even stronger.

Having had experience with droop before you should see how to position it to hold up the rear end. Add more skewers anywhere needed to get the job done.

Tell me about it that AMT kit was frustration...... In the end I just gave up and made it into something else odd yet satisfying.

BTW what's an "invincible Class" ship, It's described as a battleship / carrier?

And it had the coolest art book. I also missed it…it had other NX-01 concepts. I wish the Enterprise like early GALAXY QUEST drawings were available.
