Specifically towards the end, when the Rebels fly into the Death Star. I remember seeing this in the summer of 1983....I was just Dumbstruck watching that part, (even as a kid, I loved watching those "how they did it" type shows)
I couldn't figure out how they got the models to move down the tunnel....Plus it for its time to me personally was an amazing sequence.... The cramped nature of it, the detail, the sense of speed, how well the fore and backgrounds meshed, just tons of things. (I remember thinking how good the rebel pilots must have to be in order to fly without crashing, Wedge Antilles became my hero.) Would be interesting to see others and read their thoughts on why a specific effect is their personal best. (or even just one they liked) :)

Pretty much the entirety of Gravity. No wonder it won so many awards!
Gravity changed the game when it came to 3D. Whenever I go see a 3D movie now I ask if this is even slightly up to Gravity's standard and more often than not it's not.

Life of Pi also had incredible special effect shots. I remember just marveling at the fish scene and how they made that 3D without the use of 3D glasses and I was just amazed on how awesome they were.

As someone who grew up on practical effects, I find I have a bias against c.g.i. effects many times. (Of course I loved Tron as a Kid) But Gravity was an example of 3-D done well, Life of Pi also had some amazing C.G.I. (The Tiger), The Black hole itself in the Film "Interstellar" was pretty jaw dropping also. (Found out the effect was created by running observatory data into a graphics rendering computer and it created it, so it may ossibly be what a black hole ACTUALLY looks like which makes it all the more impressive)

The ones that impress me the most are the ones that you have no idea are FX. When you watch one of those FX reels and they show you how they added these streets and signs and extended the skyline or whatever. Like the Millennium Falcon or whatever is cool but you know it's FX.

Here's an example from 24:

Interstellar had some amazing shots, IMHO.

The giant wave. When they were trying to match the spin of the ring so they could dock (seeing that in IMAX actually made me a little queasy). The Tesseract scene.

I just love the look of that whole movie.
