What's a good time-consuming game?

I've recently started a 3rd shift desk job at a gym, which basically involves sitting doing nothing. I spent the last few weeks watching Babylon 5 on my laptop at work.

But now I'd like something else to do. So what's a good computer game that I can play for hours and hours but will also allow me to pause in when I need to check people in every so often?

Civilisation 4.

Though if you weren't from North America I'd say Football Manager 2008.
I've been playing Civilization: Revolution for 2 days now. I've probably spent the longest single session on there than any game in the last couple of years.

I was gonna say Civ4 as well. I recently got back into it thanks to the screenshots of Colonization and it's basically eaten up all my free time :p

I was thinking of putting Civ 4 or Civ: CTP back on since playing Civ: Revolution, since Revolution is a little simplified... but I've only done 3 of the 4 ways to win, on Cheiftain, so there's plenty of play left in it.

I'm not too keen on the console version of Civ: Rev... I should still give it a try at some point, but Civ4 is keeping me quite occupied.

The DS version, on the other hand... I find the concept of portable Civ highly terrifying to my health and sanity

Age of Mythology. It's cheap to buy and very addicting. There are plenty of missions and when you're done with those, you can just play random map which is just as fun.

Jade Empire
Mass Effect
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic

I don't actually know how those games are on PC, but they were all fantastic on the Xbox consoles.

MMORPGs are the biggest wastes of your life. I therefore recommend getting one for your job.

If you like space: EVE online. Very pretty game, very steep learning curve, very steep noob entry handicap.

Otherwise: World of Warcraft seems to destroy people's social lives - might be a good choice.

Most definitely Civilization IV.

I don't think that an MMO would be a good choice in your position. In MMO's you might get in situations where group members are relying on you in the game, and you might get called away at work or home time might come and you're in the middle of some big important quest.

Civ 4 is the way to go, absolutely.

Try getting one of the those Sims 2 Stories edition that are at least "laptop-friendly." If you can run regular Sims 2 on your laptop, then you'll have plenty of time to waste (and may actually enjoy it in the process).
