Whats a Convention?

Rite so I've never been to one, ever, so I have some questions.

1. What is it, exactly? a meetup of fans with the actors as guest speakers?

2. Where are they and how do you find them?

3. Are they fun?

you should go to one and see. it's an experience.

1. yes and you get to buy stuff too from vendors

2. there are a lot of organizations setting up conventions. just depends on where you live, i guess. the ones i've been to years ago were set up by creation convention. you can check out their site to see if any are going on near you. if you are outside of the united states, there are other organizations that do them.

3. they are fun and quite the experience. if you are a trek fan, you should go at least once to see.

There are a few convention organizers.

Creation Entertainment is the biggest and caters to a wide cross-section of fandom.

Fan run conventions are smaller and a lot less expensive (Shore Leave and Vulkon are two examples).

The experience is generally, autographing sessions, photo ops and forums where fans can ask the stars questions. Sometimes at the smaller ones, you can actually walk up to the actors and chat with them (don't bother going to Creation if that's what you're hoping for. If they can't sell you a ticket for it, they won't allow it.)

Fan-run conventions usually have a lot more going on than Creation events. In addition to talks by celebreties there are panels and workshops on numerous topics, costume balls, performances, game rooms, and the usual dealers' area.

Also, fan-run conventions are liable to have a wider range of interests, incl. Star Wars, BSG, B5, Firefly, Dr. Who, and maybe even fantasy, manga, Harry Potter, etc. etc.
