Yes, at least Kate and Sawyer had a choice, and knew what they were doing, but Sayid's action and Jack's inaction really created Evil!Ben!

Of course, it couldn't have played out any other way (or maybe it could have and someone else would have acted and done the same thing, who knows). Either way, Ben had to turn out the way he did. So, in spite of the immense irony of Jack and Sayid creating the Ben they didn't want, they couldn't have stopped it either.
