What year is it?

Hi - don't worry, I'm not confused by the changeover to 2008 - I was wondering, what's the "current" year in the Star Trek universe ?

As far as I can see, from books like Articles of the Federation, the start of 2381 is as "recent" as we get?* I notice that all recent books try and avoid any mention of DS9 characters or situations? Is this because the current on-going storyline is about 4 years behind the rest of the universe?

* I saw somewhere that there is a Garek story set in 2386?

There are Trek novels set in various different years, but the furthest forward that any Trek novel has gotten to date (discounting alternate/possible futures) is Articles, which spans the entirety of 2380. Next year's Destiny trilogy will be set in early 2381.

The Garak story you're referring to is probably "The Calling" from Prophecy and Change. The Pocket Timeline places that story in 2380.

Pardon me while I channel KRAD for a bit (with some help from Memory Beta). We have series taking place all throughout the 23rd and 24th Centuries right now. Here's where they stand now:
Vanguard: 2266
DS9R (as of Warpath): 2377
Klingon Empire (as of Enemy Territory):2376
SCE (as of Progress): 2377
VGRR: 2378
NF: 2379
TNGR: 2380
TTN: 2380

Actually, Vanguard is in early 2266 as of Reap the Whirlwind and DS9R is in January 2377 as of Warpath.

^ I guess those and Destiny kind of make me TrekLit's "January Man" (though the trilogy is set in February). ;)

^^Well, giving how many endings you've brought about in Trek lit, it's only fair that you should have some connection with beginnings as well.

Thanks for letting me know, I'll fix that.

So is SCE ahead of DS9 then?

Yup. As of Ghost and Remembrance of Things Past, SCE is in August 2377.

 In a post a few months back you said Ghost was in July and Remembrance was in August. Has there been a timequake?

^ Yeah, actually, Ghost does come first by several weeks. My bad.

As far as the OP goes though, there is no progression of years in the books as years in real life go by. Many of the series have been stuck in the same year for a few years. It has been some time since books were realeased for some series, and other series have many novels all taking place in the same year but released over several years.

TOS- No concrete progression of time.
TNGR- (Not counting AotF)It's been 2380 for 4 months, since the release of Resistance. But it was 2379 for 3 years and 3 months before that, since the release of A Time for Love.
DS9R- It's been 2377 for 1 year and 10 months, since the release of Warpath. And it was 2376 for 5 years and 10 months before that, since A Stitch in Time came out.
VOYR- It's been 2378 for 4 years and 7 months, since the release of Homecoming.
ENTR- It's been 2155 for 10 months, since The Good That Men Do.
NF- It's been 2379 for 3 years 2 months, since After the Fall.
SCE- It been 2377 for 2 years 2 months, since Honor was released.
SGZR- It's been 2333 for 5 years 10 months, since Gauntlet.
GRKN- It's been 2376 for 4 years 2 months, since A Good Day to Die.
TTN- It's been 2380 for 3 years 9 months, since Taking Wing.
VAN- It's been 2266 for 7 months, since Reap the Whirlwind. And it was 2265 for 1 year 10 months before that, since Harbinger.
