What would make a great second season of a show?

I notice that a number of you who replied to my "what makes a great first season of a show?" thread have brought up the difficulty of maintaining the show's goodness past the first season and the shows that have failed in doing that. So, for you guys, I created this thread.
What does it take to create a great second season of a show after the first season is completed? What should one do with the characters and the premise at that point? What are examples of shows who have succeeded in making a great second season?

Lost and Dexter had great second seasons. But that's because they just did what made the other seasons successful. Either you have a story to tell, characters worth talking about, and actors/writers/producers/etc who are competent at their jobs, or you don't. The rules don't change according to the season.
