What would happen on Earth if the Federation surrendered to a hostile power?

If the Federation surrendered after a war to an enemy like the Klingons, the Romulans or the Dominion, what would the transition period be like and what would happen during the first days, weeks and months on Earth?

How much would things change for the average Federation citizen on Earth during this time, if there was no previous attack on the planet and everything was going on as usual before the UFP surrendered?

Klingons: depending on how hostile relations and the war actually were, we'd just become either a 2nd class species in their empire (if they'd view us as a useful species and the war was relatively 'honorable'), or as target practise for warriors in hunts (if that wasn't the case).

Romulans would keep a tight lid on us and establish strict control and surveillance on us by the Tal Shiar, in addition to a heavy military presence.

Dominion doing the same as the Romulans would be the very best scenario. More likely, they'd exterminate us outright, or infect us with a disease such as the Teplan Blight.

There probably would be chaos for a few weeks during the transitory period. Only the Borg would be able to establish order within 48 hours or so by simply assimilating entire populations and let the newly added assimilees start assimilating others.

Suffice it to say, whoever took over, things would change a lot for the average citizen.

In First Contact, the Borg obliterate the biosphere and Earthers become drones.

In versions of Star Trek Myriad Universes, Klingons occupy Earth until the detonation of the Genesis device on Praxis forces them into an unconditional surrender.

In the Comic where Romulans conquered Earth in the 23rd century, they reduce Humans to the Stone Age and keep them illiterate.

In various Kelvin timelines, Klingons and Romulans colonise Earth and extinguish Humans. They keep the White House but Klingons will build a massive pyramid in Sam Francisco.

In Shatner novels and old RPGs of the mirror universe, Terra is devastated but Humans survive.

Would be interesting to speculate about what the first days, weeks and months after such a defeat and the subsequent surrender would be like. Especially as most of the time when this scenario comes up, this subject will be rarely discussed.

How would it be significantly different from how humans tend to react in the face of any natural disaster or crisis of this sort?

I imagine some humans would try to fight back, others would try to be with their loved ones, others might not actively fight but would try to fortify their positions, people with access to spaceflight might very well try to get the heck out of there...

Depends who conquered them, of course. The Dominion would have wiped them out.

Cardassians would do exactly what they did on Bajor. Klingons would run through on a binge of killing and celebrating then leave. Romulans might actually change day to day life the least, they’d eliminate free speech, kill the leaders and start disappearing dissenters but try to build up a functioning world.

Generic aliens, it really depends why they conquered Earth.

The Romulans also held the mirror Earth for a decade in DC's Mirror Universe Saga arc, as that Earth fought a losing war with Romulus and was annexed into the Empire. Eventually a human resistance rallied and forced them off world, not too unlike the Bajorans driving away the Cardassians, but that was only the start. The resistance movement evolved into a political force which became the basis for the Imperial Terran government, promising that Earth would never be conquered or occupied again. They would attack and conquer any potential enemies first.
