I've enjoyed the "What did you read" threads from the past few years. They always give me a chance to look back at what I've read over the course of the previous twelve months and reflect. Since no one has started a new one yet, I have.

What did you read last year, Star Trek or otherwise?

I had a lot of lawn and pool work at our new house, as well as our first three grandchildren all born this year, that kept me really busy, so I didn't get around to reading nearly as much as I have in years past. Throw in fifty hours a week at work, and two of the largest Song of Ice and Fire books, and it was still a pretty decent year for me. Next year, in addition to another grandchild coming in March, and a lot of landscaping and yard work, I plan to finish the Song of Ice and Fire series that are currently out and finally get completely caught up with the Star Trek: Enterprise novel series.

I had hoped to get caught up on a bunch of the Trek series last year, but I wasn't able to get caught up on any of them, although I do have only the last Vanguard e-novella and Voyager: Atonement. I really didn't read anywhere near as much as I hoped I was going to.

For 2015 my reading goal was to finish the handful of books from 2014 I hadn't read and the 24 old numbered TNG books I had left to finish off that series. I had a stretch goal of maybe reading the Mirror Universe Shatnerverse trilogy. I did all that except for the Shatnerverse trilogy. I decided instead to start in on the SNW series. I also read half the 2015 books.

The 2014 books I read were good solid reads and in a couple cases great stuff. The standout here was Acts of Contrition.

The year before last my goal was to read around 18 of the old numbered Voyager books. That was a slog. The 2 dozen TNG's this year was a much more enjoyable experience but still had it's bad moments. According to my Goodreads history the only 4 star was Nightshade and and I gave 2 stars to 5 books so you can tell how I felt about this as a whole.

I only read about half the 2015 books this year so far. The standout for me was Takedown.

The SNW books are just not working out for me. A couple stories per book are interesting but for the most part these just aren't jumping out at me.

I'm working on reading all the Pocket Books Trek and and am getting near the end. What's left is 3 dozen of the numbered TOS books, 8 SNW, 7 Shatnerverse and the unread from 2015.

What I'm planning to read this year is finishing up SNW, Shatnerverse, the unread from 2015 and as much as I get to from 2016.

I tried to read more non-Trek books in 2015 compared to 2014 and, now I've listed them, it appears I've succeeded. Frankly, I'm surprised, as I said the same thing in 2014, but with no success.
I did begin re-reading the DS9 relaunch, but only got as far as Mission Gamma before getting knocked off track, so I'll have to continue with it this year.

I read too little really, mostly TrekLit. I should read some literature, or other sf/fantasy. But my mind just hasn't been set for that in the last two years, and I needed the escapism. Having said that, what I read of TrekLit mostly pleased me, nothing horrible.

This year the number of books I read dipped from previous years, largely due to spending more time reading graphic novels, and reading some larger books like The Count of Monte Cristo. I still got through 52 books, and a number of Graphic novels I haven't accounted. I did re-read a large chunk of the Sherlock Holmes short stories, but I didn't record them.
Highlights were reading the Gorkon books, starting Bernard Cornwell's Saxon Chronicles, and working through Ed Brubaker's entire run on Captain America.

I confess: a lot of my reading time these days is taken up by books I'm editing or writing jacket copy for. This being the beginning of the year, I can't resist plugging some of the upcoming books I edited for Tor:

The Brotherhood of the Wheel by R.S. Belcher: A dark fantasy novel about a secret society of bikers and long-haul truckers who protect the U.S. Interstate Highway system from supernatural threats.

Red Right Hand by Levi Black: a fast-paced urban fantasy about young woman who is recruited against her will by a Lovecraftian elder god to protect Earth from the other Lovecraftian elder gods.

Deadlands: Thunder Mountain Rising by Jeff Mariotte. A new "Weird Western" based on the popular role-playing game.

I confess: a lot of my reading time these days is taken up by books I'm editing or writing jacket copy for. This being the beginning of the year, I can't resist plugging some of the upcoming books I edited for Tor:

The Brotherhood of the Wheel by R.S. Belcher: A dark fantasy novel about a secret society of bikers and long-haul truckers who protect the U.S. Interstate Highway system from supernatural threats.

Red Right Hand by Levi Black: a fast-paced urban fantasy about young woman who is recruited against her will by a Lovecraftian elder god to protect Earth from the other Lovecraftian elder gods.

Both of these sound interesting. The Belcher book sounds like it would fit perfectly into the world of the Supernatural TV show and the Black book had me at "Lovecraftian."

Foul Deeds will Rise was definitely a highlight, also the German editions of the "The Fall" novels (the last one still missing, to be published in late January.

Atonement was also great.

I have to admit: I read just Star Trek novels last year......

Well, all the 2015 ST novels. And I re-read The Lost Years, and parts of several other novels, while searching for the account of a teenage Kirk saving a toddler Riley's life on Tarsus IV (it's in A Flag Full of Stars, if you missed that staff meeting).

And I've read a number of biographical, historical, and political works, including Madison's Music, Burt Neuborne's history of the First Amendment. And I read Bryson's A Walk in the Woods, on the recommendation of someone with whom I shared a dining car table on my Spring vacation.

And for my annual Easter read of a classic religious work, I read John Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress (previous Easter reads include Dante's Divine Comedy, and one that figures rather prominently in a certain ST story arc, Milton's Paradise Lost).

And I've been reading magazines. Popular Science, Model Railroader, Popular Photography, the NMRA Magazine (formerly Scale Rails, formerly the NMRA Bulletin), Smithsonian, Westways, and Zoonooz.

I also read a literary magazine, Oz-Story 6, which included a number of short stories and novellas, one of which (namely, Oz and the Three Witches) managed to retcon away a canonical inconsistency without introducing any significant revisionism.

A certain spy-fi-mismarketed-as-sci-fi novel came to mind, one whose title and author I won't speak of here, one whose author presented an utterly unsympathetic protagonist, melodramatic black-hat caricatures for antagonists, and a complete lack of understanding of the difference between an intravehicular pressure suit and a mere G-suit, but even though it seems as if I'd read that waste of paper and ink only a few months ago, it has in fact been less than a month shy of 3 years ago since I did anything other than pack it up for a room renovation, then reshelve it. (The only reason why I haven't dumped it on the used book market is because I don't want to inflict it upon anybody else; the only reason why I haven't recycled it with the waste paper is because the very idea of deliberately destroying [or even damaging] a book makes my blood boil.)
