Captain
Captain
I've enjoyed the "What did you read" threads from the past couple of years. They always give me a chance to look back at what I've read over the course of the previous twelve months and reflect. I've been keeping an eye out for a new thread for this year but hadn't seen one. The last couple were started by StefanSeitz but, when I checked, he hasn't posted since last January.

So, without further ado, I'll go ahead and start a new thread this year with proper credit given to StefanSeitz. StefanSeitz, if you planned to quietly sneak back in here after a year and start a new thread, then I humbly apologize for stealing your thunder.

What did you read last year, Star Trek or otherwise?

Here is my list, in reading order.

Oh, and Happy New Year everyone!

- Byron

I didn't really read anything until I went on vacation in November. While there, I read all 10 Shatnerverse novels. Kirk is my favorite character, and I was curious how Shatner handled him. I found the series to be easy to read, here are my basic impressions of each:

Collision Course - It was pretty good. I liked the characterization of young Kirk and the stuff about Kodos. I wish Trial Run hadn't been cancelled.
Ashes of Eden - I liked exploring this particular period of Kirk's life. Some people seemed OOC at times, but overall it was a fun story.
The Return - I really enjoyed this one, it might be my favorite. Plenty of good moments with the Borg.
Avenger - This was good too, it moved at a fast pace, the quarantine idea was interesting, the stuff involving Sarek less so.
Spectre - This started off pretty good, but it could be a little out there at times.
Dark Victory - Not as good as the last one, it was convoluted but still entertaining
Preserver - Some interesting ideas, but a disappointing finale in some ways.
Captain's Peril - I'm torn, I appreciated it trying to do something smaller scale and more intimate, but it wasn't as engrossing as the others, the flashbacks were well done though
Captain's Blood - This was more like it, one of my favorites and an interesting exploration of the Remans
Captain's Glory - The Totality is an interesting concept, there was some good action in the book. I'd say it was a fitting finale.

Read 101 books this year. Didn't have a goal until I was in the mid 90's then though hey, I should try for a hundred. There were a couple audio books in there but mostly the hight count was due to blasting though some of the old numbered ST books, and almost caught up on all the new stuff except for 3 TOS novels form last year, a bunch of Richard Stark and Hard Case Crimes novels, some Maigret's. The kind of stuff you can read pretty quickly.

Last year I read 22 novels, novellas, comic book trade paperback collections, and comic books arcs. This is all based off of my Shelfari account, so there are a few things that aren't exact. When I read individual comic issues, I didn't count them until I had finished the whole arc, so I wouldn't end up with a million individual issues. I also read a few short stories and parts of onmibuses, but since I didn't complete them I didn't include them.

I didn't read that much this year (2013 except for my college books) but i started reading the myriad universes novels story and so far the Short novel A less perfect Union is holding my attention and it makes me wish they could do a complete series of novels of the United Earth Starship Enterprise and it's adventures maybe even a book where Commander Kirk finally becomes Captain Kirk.

NOTE: Links are to my review of each novel.
