This may give away my age, but it was Speed Racer and Battle Of The Planets for me.
Lots of the ones I enjoyed as a kid have already been mentioned in this thread - Transformers, Ulysses 31, MCOG, Battle of the Planets, etc, etc.
However, as for the ones that I've enjoyed as an adult, well I liked Cowboy Bebop & Trigun, but the first one I really loved was You're Under Arrest. I think I figured out then that I like the more silly and comedic anime rather than the stuff that tries to be cool or deep. Pretty much mirrors my taste in non-anime really - I prefer knowing, self-referential nods & winks and comedy..
I LOVED Ranma 1/2. Still watch it from time to time (in fact, just rewatched it all recently). Wish it was available on R2 DVD. Shampoo is the funniest character, the cheeky bitch. But they're all funny - Kodachi, Happosai, and Genma especially. Genma is a complete bastard of a father though...
And I think I'm a little in love with Ukyo...

That is almost my same exact experience (grew up in S.Cal as well). When Robotech first came out, my friends and I would meet at 7am in the library before school to discuss what happened in the previous day's episode.For me - 1978 - KTLA Family Film Festival - Movie: Space Cruiser Yamato compilation film (one year later, the series was released in the U.S. as Starblazers).
From there I learned there was OTHER anime I had in fact enjoyed as a younger child, including Speed Racer (aka Mach Go Go); Gigantor (aka Iron Man 28); The Amazing Three (same name in Japan). And while Starblazers got my interest up to the point I was spending most of my time at any Science Fiction cons I went to in the Anime Video Rooms - when Robotech mania hit, a lot of local Anime Clubs sprung up (that showed anime on weekends fromvarious sources); and my anime collecting phase began....

First anime that I watched that I actually was aware was anime was Sailor Moon. I probably only noticed because I was watching it in Cantonese.
I suppose Macross Frontier got me rehooked recently... and now I've seen so many that they've all become one giant series.

I was beginning to wonder, as I read through this thread, if I would be the first to mention it. BGC was my first, too. I was in high school at the time, and we only had the first three episodes, along with an un-subtitled bootleg of a movie I now know was Venus Wars.
Since we didn't know what anyone was saying, we made up our own dialogue. Because everyone had "gary" written on their shirt, we decided they were all named Gary. Even the girls.

In 1989 Akira bootlegs made me think anime was the next big thing. I was right.
In newer anime, 1995's Ghost in the Shell left me speechless, and the Patlabor movies showed that power suits could have intelligent stories. I also like GITS TV, Wonderful Days, Blue Gender, Appleseed, Heroic Age, Starship Operators, Macross Zero, Gundam 00, Cowboy Beebop, Votoms, and a handful of others.
95% of other anime is kids stuff to me though unfortunatley. They have never really become "serious" enough on a wide scale for me.
