What was the first ANIME you got hooked on?

The series that actually got me to check out other anime was the infamous Dragonball Z when I came across a marathon on TV and got hooked. I've since found a plethora of shows and films that were better than that show but it was a good watch at the time even if I don't l don't care for it much anymore. Although, before that I'd seen a couple others like Iria: Zeiram the Animation, Akira, Green Legend Ran, and Robotech.

12 years and 612 titles later.....still a fan of the medium. :D

Toonami did it for me with Gundam Wing, Dragonball Z, and Outlaw Star.

I remember buying two Gundam Wing models and gawking over the inserts detailing all of the other ones with my friends. We were all a bit crazy about Wing and Z.

Why do you always cite how many shows you've seen? It's like every other anime thread you drop the number in somewhere. Just enjoy! There's no need to try to flaunt it.

the first anime I saw from beginning to end that I enjoyed was either Cowboy Bebop or Outlaw Star(I cant remember which, as I think they were both on at around the same time on Adult Swim, back when Adult Swim was worth watching.

but the one that really blew me away was Trigun. Vash & Legato were my first bishonen loves.

Im currently waiting for AS to hurry up(dammit!) & finish running the rest of Code Geass R2, & then I think Im going on a long extended anime break... I dunno, i think Ive just been burned out on it recently. Which is weird cuz I dont really watch a lot of anime compared to Im sure many others on here. I have stuff on my Netflix account I want to watch, but theres not much else out there that has caught my interest, & I just dont feel any urge to rush into it any time soon.

Though I probably will watch Ponyo(Miyazaki's newest) whenever it comes out on dvd here...

Maybe zakkrusz has a touch of idiot-savantism, and there's no actual effort involved in keeping up with the number?

"612. Yep, definitely 612 anime titles."

"Time for Wopner."

;)

As a kid in the 80's I watched Speed Racer, Tranzor Z (Mazinger Z), Voltron (I preferred the lions to the vehicles), and Robotech, never having heard the word "anime" and having no idea that any of this came from Japan. From 88 to 94 I had next to zero exposure to anime. Then I bought a VCR and checked out most of the anime titles from the local video store and quickly became hooked. The first really long series that I saw to completion was probably Inuyasha (one of my spouse's favorites).

These days I especially like Miyazaki's films, but am not following any series right now.

My FIRST anime, and the first one that got me into anime all together was Trigun. It happened when I was up late one night watching Adult Swim in 2003, (this was a long time ago, when it use to be good and all they showed was anime during the week), and Trigun was on, I sat through that night and watched it, and was instantly hooked.

After that, I made sure to watch every single episode and found out about other Anime's on Adult Swim at the time, including Cowboy Bebop and Inuyasha. Then later found out at Ghost in the Shell and watched the first movie and followed the TV series. It was all thanks to Trigun though, that is what hooked me on Anime, and following that Cowboy Bebop.

Now i'm into all kinds, I have 300 GB of Anime on my computer right now.

I enjoyed Sailor Moon as a kid, but that doesn't count. The anime that got me hooked on the genre is One Piece. Brilliant anime that is extremely underrated here in the west. I couldn't stand Naruto or Bleach, but I love One Piece. Best Shonen ever.

Well, in this particular case, this is a thread about ourselves after all. Adding a bit of personal info in topic about when and how you first got into the hobby and the like seemed appropriate. Also if I was trying to flaunt I would have put more than just a tiny sentence. :)

Although, I will admit to being an anal retentive collector with all his media on shelves in alphabetical order for easy access, in that "maybe he has a problem" kind of way, and being a repository of useless trivia like song lyrics and movie facts.

As for why I keep track of the anime, mostly because membership to the anime indexing/listing service came with the forums as part of signing up. It's extremely useful in cross-referencing production staff, companies, cast and other such information. It would be a waste not to use it. For instance if you like a show a lot, you can look up it's author and look into his other works finding new shows to watch. You can also add information yourself and rate the show which is added to the pool of other users who have seen the show. It is then displayed in a graph on the series page.

Whatever, I didn't really notice. If it bothers you, I can keep it in mind. I don't mind constructive criticism. *shrug*

I'd say Dragonball Z was what got me into it in general (Though I'd seen some stuff before it.)

Of course, what solidified my induction into the anime genre was Toonami + Adult Swim (back in the day... when they pwnd). Gundam, Outlaw Star, Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, etc. etc.
