What was L'rell's plan?

Prax

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
I'm sure this question has been posed in various other threads...but this is serious! We need to get to the bottom of this!

Can one of you smart souls out there create a succinct explanation of her overarching goals, and how she planned to accomplish them?

She wanted to turn Voq into a human klingon hybrid so she could giggle about him hiding out on a starfleet vessel

It was a cunning plan - you could put a tail on it and call it a weasel.

First mutilate your boyfriend and mess with his head so much he's useless. Rely heavily on him getting taken on the enemy ship and given a plum job - say security! Then get yourself miraculously captured and kept in the brig. Wait until you can convince the equally moronic people holding you to win the war for you by threatening your own people. Or something like that.

L'Rell wanted Voq to infiltrate Starfleet, specifically Discovery, so they could get close to the Spore Drive. If Ash were activated into Voq he could take over the ship and and bring Discovery to the Empire and rule because they have the ship with the Mighty Spore Drive. Then they could develop a fleet of ships that don't need warp drive and can go anywhere in the blink of an eye. Conquering wherever they want, whenever they want, as soon as they want.

That's the reason why L'Rell told Cornwell she wanted asylum. She was hoping, with Discovery nearby, she could be taken prisoner, then she'd be freed by Voq and they could claim the ship as their own.

With Ash Tyler as Chief of Security, it would put Voq in the perfect position onboard the ship, short of being Captain.

Then things went wrong at the end of "Lethe" and when L'Rell finally did end up onboard Discovery, she couldn't get Ash to turn back into Voq. Whenever he'd see her, all he'd have is nightmares. It took Mirror Voq to wake up Prime Voq, shortly after which he was found out. So, there went L'Rell's plan.

This does a pretty good job explaining how completely nonsensical L'Rells plan is.

She was counting on Discovery going to mirror universe and bringing back MU georgiou. Then MU georgiou would try to destroy Klingon home world just like she did in MU. Voq was turned into Tyler so he could provide intel about Klingon homworld to georgiou. She was planning to grab the detonator from georgiou and use it to unite the Klingons, it was kind of lucky for her that they just gave it to her. It also didn't hurt that Kol got killed along the way.

The plan worked perfectly and now she is the leader of Klingons!

It's really kind of obvious, IMO. I didn't have any trouble understanding it.

All things considered, it wasn't actually a bad plan. It's just that every single part of it blew up in L'Rell's face (literally, in one case) and she left too many things to chance that she didn't actually control. So in that sense, it's a lot like the way intricate plans backfire in the REAL WORLD, no?

The plan was there but the show just didn't do a great job laying it out as a plan... so when literally everything went wrong with it, it was hard to tell the difference between 'plan going wrong' and 'these are just the random things that happened in the plot' so by the end of the season it seemed like everything that happened to get L'Rell where she was, and whatever goal she had, was completely random.

The sarcasm is so thick in this room that I can't see the answers. I don't think L'Rell was hoping to infiltrate Discovery because she couldn't have known of it's existence. Unless she planned to transform Voq prior to learning about the Discovery.

Edit: If it was Discovery she wanted access to, she should've collaborated with Mudd, whom she had custody of.

Plan!? :guffaw:

(Shhhhhh! You're not supposed to ask that sort of question! Just because the show is serialized doesn't mean you should expect developments to flow logically from one episode to the next, y'know! Besides, that storyline is all over now, so it doesn't matter anyway, right?)

Her plan was to gin up a couple of million subscribers at seven bucks a month, by hook or by crook.

Then, wait for the above-the-line award nominations for the creatives to roll in.

Discovery was known about by the Empire by the time of "Choose Your Pain" (Episode 5 when Ash is introduced) and certainly after "The Butcher's Knife" (Episode 4) when they save the mining colony. News spreads and that incident is probably what put Discovery on the Klingon's radar.
