What type of X-Box should I get?

OptimusPete

As the nights start getting longer and my girlfriend has rather inconsiderately buggered back off to America I have to decided to purchase an X-Box to stave of lonliness with/alienate my firends/sit in my room playing excessively (delete as applicable).

My question, since I am not an avid games console enthusiast or someone who has kept up with the last few generations of consoles (my last one was an N64 way back when), is which of the various models is the best to get? Does the various HDD sizes make much of a difference? I'm not fussed about HD capability as the tv I will be playing it on is quite small anyway.

So Trekbbs regale me with your wisdom :bolian:

P.S please no evangelical Sony or Nintendo heads trying to convince me to buy the PS3 or Wii, The PS3 is too expensive for me and the Wii doesn;t have enough games that interest me

The HDD size only really matters if you're going to be downloading videos and demos and all that sort of stuff on Xbox Live Marketplace. If you're just going to use it to save your games on, you don't need a super huge one. But just make sure that you do buy one with an HDD. The super-cheap arcade version, which doesn't come with an HDD, isn't worth it.

Also, enjoy. :techman:

If your talking about a 360 go for a 120gig version, if your really get into it you would regret getting either the 20gig version or one without a HD.

But if you have no intention of using the 360 on a HDTV or a monitor and have no interest in playing online(you would need to subscribe annual to play over xblive), then can i suggest a few more cheaper but still fun gaming options.

Why not just get the original xbox, it comes with a built in 10gig HD for saves and music and they are dirt cheap to buy,and games will cost next to nothing also. and there is a huge back catalogue of great games on it.

Or even a gamecube again a great little system which will be going for a song as will its great games.

And of course you have the PS2, again dirt cheap with a massive back catalogue of great games that you could buy really cheap.

Don't buy one right now, they are getting a price drop next month (on the 7th I believe) to $200 for the Arcade (the tard pack without the hard drive), $300 for the Pro (60 GB), and $400 for the Elite (120 GB).

Go with either the Pro or Elite, you'll want to be able to download demos, game content and Xbox Live Arcade games. Plus with the update this fall you'll be able to install games to your hard drive to decrease loading times.

And Seph Said Unto the OptimusPete, "Get Thee A PRO after the price drop, for it is the best deal for thy situation, and Halo3 shall be thy remedy of excess time"~Sephantheians 4:09

I'd get the Elite for the hard disc space. You may not need it now, but since you can't upgrade without buying their over priced accessory, you might as well save money now.

Does this apply to the UK as well?

Just checked on PLAY.com...

Xbox 360 Premium Console with 60GB HDD

£179.99

Am thinking about trading in my current 20GB within the next 18 months and pay the difference to get the new 60GB version because it has a better internal design than mine (all the fixes) and the extra space will be good.

I have a launch day machine which RRoD'ed on me. I bought an Arcade to replace it with the 65nm GPU and it doesn't seem a lot quieter or cooler.

I bought an Elite several months ago, and it's been nothing but good to me. Expensive, but worth it. Of course, it'll be dropping $50 soon. :scream:

While were talking about 360's, a friend of mine has a problem...

He has 2 profiles (one with LIVE) and one without, the 360 created the 2nd one somehow when he orignally signed up to LIVE.

Now the problem is he has saved files (Achievements) from Mass Effect & Assassins Creed on his non Live account and would like to move them to his LIVE account.

Now I know its impossible to copy or move these files inbetween profiles on the 360 (thank you very much Microsoft pinheads) but could we use the 360 data transfer cable to move them from a profile on my 360 (Premium Version) and then move them back to his Elite afterwards.

Or could the memory card units be used in the same way too ?

^I don't think so. In fact, I think Datel made a cable that allows you to connect 360 hard disks and memory cards to your PC. Some people tried what you are suggesting and were told by the console that this would disable achievements within the game.

I picked up the elite last year, not only for the bigger HDD but for the video out for HDTV thing i'm blanking out on the name for at the moment.

Well looks like my friend will jsut have to do Assasinns Creed & Mass Effect all over again

Seriously though Microsoft I do love the 360 but you are still pinheads in some circles :p

Yes the price will be dropping $50.00 on September 7th.
I would go with either the Pro (60 GB) or the Elite (120 GB).

If you have a Circuit City in your area they are giving a free controller with purchase this week and you can always get $50.00 back on their 30 day price match guarantee.

BTW all the new systems have HDMI.

I have this problem on mine, but I am sure you can go into the setup and transfer saved games from one profile to another
