what TV shows should exist, but don't?

- A show about the rise and career of the Antichrist.

I second that one.

Miracles might have evolved into that story. I got strong antichrist vibes from Paul - who would be unaware of his own identity. What if Alva Keel suspected who Paul was, and that was the reason he contacted Paul in the first place - to keep an eye on him and see if his fears are realized? Alva's mission may have been to kill Paul.
I think that if the show continued, it would have stuck with the three main characters investigating and stopping whatever "evil" was coming. Paul might have played a crucial role, but that's about it.

On the comic front, Reaper could have evolved into that story, too. The other option, even crazier: Sam's the Second Coming. Morgan could be the antichrist. However, the way they were going, it seemed unlikely that they would get that heavy. They were on the CW after all.
Same thing. Sam's purpose might have been revealed, but the show would never have been much more than him and his buddies vs. the Devil.

So far, no one has made a modern day series specifically about a central character rising to prominence and influence in accordance with the prophecies about a messiah/antichrist.

A couple of miniseries based on Graham Masterson's earlier works. Maybe Ritual or Family Portrait.
Oooh, Ritual is a nasty one...I don't think they could do it justice on TV. And if they did do it justice, I don't think I'd watch it...:D

But yeah, some Masterton would be nice. His very early ones from the 70's could be adapted fairly easily as they're short and to the point.

Charnel House FTW!

As much as I loathe Pat Robertson, his novel "The End of the Age" is a pretty interesting read and would make for an interesting anti-christ related show or movie. It follows the non-Rapture interpretation of Revelation, so it's much more interesting, to me at least.

Just take out all the long narratives of preaching that go on in it, and it could really make a pretty cool take on the anti-christ stuff.

It's nice to see so many people interested in anti-christ and armageddon type stuff on here... Makes me feel like the screenplay I'm writing currently could actually be relevant to today's audiences... Not sure if I could turn it into a TV show. Possibly I could make it into a pilot movie script; but I'd rather it stay a movie, just in case my dream casting could actually happen (doubt it, but one can always hope).

I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned more Star Trek. I'd also vote for more Babylon 5, but for some reason, after the original five years, they just couldn't seem to get it right. The movies were okay, but Crusade and The Lost Tales are best forgotten.

In historical fiction TV, the Flashman Papers. They're like Sharpe, only more historically accurate, go to more parts of the world (Madagascar, US, China, Europe, Ethiopia etc), and a damn sight more fun. If you like historical fiction, read 'em.

In SF, that idea about making a Hugo/Nebula winner series is pretty good. Some sort of alt.history series would be good - but not Sliders.

Fantasy. I'd like to see more Discworld. Apparently there was talks between Pratchett's people and the BBC to do a Guards series, but the Beeb insisted on final cut, not trusting Pratchett, who who created it, to get it right. WTF?

Also, a real Conan series, using just the stories created by Howard. Maybe the others in the original novels (de Camp, Carter, Nyberg). Not the Jordan ones or any of the other authors that came after the 1960s. The Howard stories are amazingly dark but brilliantly written. I didn't mind the guy who played Conan in the 90s series, but the scripts weren't well done.

Discworld is on Beeb 3 I believe.

There's been 2 live action miniseries (Hogfather and The Colour of Magic) and 2 animated (Wyrd Sisters and Soul Music), there will be a 3rd live action, Going Postal, later this year. The Beeb was going to make Guards! Guards! but something went wrong I can't find the quote (I've been looking), I'll get back to you on that.

West Wing: The Next Generation. ;)

They really need to make more sci-fi war movies that actually have a story and don't have the word "Star" in the title. Same with TV, something like Space: Above and Beyond, but good.

Sky are the ones who currently hold the rights to Discworld and have made Hogfather, Colour of Magic/The Light Fantastic and are currently making Going Postal, and I believe they plan on making more. I don't remember anything about BBC making Guards! Guards! though, must have been a while ago before Sky got the rights.

There was rumours last year that Neil Gaiman was writing a series for the BBC, which is something I'd like to see more of is original shows from SF&F writers, getting a chance to tell limited run/mini-series stories.

I hope Going Postal will be an improvement over the dire Pratchett TV that we've seen so far...

Well they seem to have given it a decent budget to it... something like 3/5 of their entire original drama budget. Of course that guarantees nothing.

Yeah you're right about Miracles and Reaper. TV shows are never as interesting as I want them to be. :D

I haven't been watching Supernatural, but I might start this season - from the preview it looks like they're doing an Apocalypse plotline. Not sure if the antichrist is depicted tho.

Definitely. Tried watching Clone Wars, bleah. Where is the character development, where is the story?!? It's all bang-bang.

"CSI: Fargo"... sort of a crossover between the Cohen brothers' "Fargo" and the CSI franchise. ;)

Which reminds me. I want to see David Lynch take another stab at TV. He just need some collaborators who can reign in his excessive weirdness that causes stories to go off the rails.

Or make movies from the original stories. The SFX might be beyond a TV budget.

A sit-com set in a Concentration Camp
That's a job for Ron Moore. :D

I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned more Star Trek.
Sure, I'd love any or all of the following:

1) A post-Dominion War series focusing on Garak rebuilding the Obsidian Order and frakking up the Federation's carefully maintained peace by trying to get revenge against the Dominion.

2) Another stab at Birth of the Federation, this time done right.

3) Get the Trek XI characters on TV and in movies every two years. Since I'm dictator of the cosmos, I can make this happen.

4) Let's have a Federation civil war while we're at it.

Can't believe I didn't think of this before...

I would love to see Kage Baker's Company novels turned into a series. The novels & short stories span millennia... There would be SOOO much material to use to last a good number of seasons.

Joy
