So, I picked three: Acting, 22nd century technology, and uniforms.

Acting: This encompasses all of the lead characters, as well as the recurring ones. When they hit it right, they produced some of the best moments on TV ever. Archer's trying to save Trip and Hoshi in Observer Effect, T'Pol's slow descent in Impulse, Trip's breakdown in The Forgotten -- all of those are rewind moments for me. As someone stated above, there was an everydayness to the acting. It wasn't them just standing and declaiming; there was actual conversation going on. And that led to great character development. These characters weren't always right, didn't always do the best thing, but you got why they did what they did. A larger than life acting style (ahemKirkandPicardahem) makes character mistakes seem too contrived, not natural.

22 century technology: some of my favorite moments are tech related, showing the limits of what they had. Archer trying to slam a broken door; the grappler ripping out the Klingon ship's engine; everybody being afraid of the transporter. Good stuff.

uniforms: These are the best! Practical, with pockets (my biggest pet peeve of the other series -- so stupid). I love the sexy black shirt underneath. It looked so comfortable. And they made a great bridge between 21st and 23rd century clothing, with the cool away jackets, the aviator shades and (my favorite) the NX-01 ball caps. All in all, you got the sense that this was what people could wear day in and day out. Aaaaand, I have to acknowledge the smokin' hot dress blues that Archer wore in TATV.

CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT:
I was really put off by Archer early on. I’m sure I don’t have to elaborate for most of the people here. The resentment and rudeness would have worked for me if the writers had done a better job in establishing the Vulcans’ intrusive role in human affairs since First Contact. But all we got was a passing remark from little Jonny Archer that a classmate said the Vulcans were holding us back.

Fortunately, the writers had the good sense to bring our heroes along as they make mistakes and learn -- sometimes the really, really hard way (Cogenitor) -- that they don’t know everything after all.

ARCHER:
Our little boy grew up to be one heckuva leader ("The final frontier begins here. Let’s explore it together...")

TRIP:
From Frahed catfish and Pee-kahn pie eatin’ comic relief hick to confident, courageous starship captain and then on to T’Pol’s lover and a grieving father in four years ... wow, what a Trip!

T’POL:
While she’s not my favorite, she sure did have an amazing journey. She starts out as a trusted aide to Soval (who tried to look out for her and was probably her only friend in the V’Las administration). She’s grows from a reluctant adviser to Archer in Broken Bow to a loyal friend, sometimes to her own detriment.

PHLOX:
We got to see a lot of facets in our optimistic doc (Dear Doctor, A Night in Sickbay, The Breach, Similitude, Terra Prime). I loved seeing his wife, but I do wish we had been able to visit Denobula.

MALCOLM:
Probably the best development in his character was learning he had this mysterious past with The Dark Side of Starfleet. Shame it wasn’t introduced sooner. Next best was his admissions in Shuttlepod One. Has trouble getting close to people, even his own family, a bit on the pessimistic side (tho' he claimed he was being realistic). Third best revelation is his adherence to strict protocols (Minefield).

HOSHI:
She underwent an amazing transformation from timid linguist to a fighter who does her best to fend off the Reptilians (going so far as to attempt suicide), and who in the end, stands up to Samuels in Terra Prime.

TRAVIS:
I always felt bad that Travis had so little to do which really hurt his development (despite having an entire episode devoted to his background & family). He did have a good role as an MU badass. It would have been nice to have seen more of that in season 5.

SCOTT:
Loved this guy from Quantum Leap on... It was frustrating to see him take such a wooden approach in his performance (at least he wasn’t as stiff as Stewart and Brooks in the early seasons, but he was a close third). He sure warmed up to the role in season three though!

CONNOR:
Seriously, do I actually have to elaborate?

SUPPORTING REGULAR CAST:
I think the credits for John, Dom, Linda and Anthony should have come at the end of the show to reflect their status as supporting cast. In the case of Linda and Anthony in particular, it would have made more sense in light of how little they were used. I do think that generally they did well with what they had to work with, tho’ admittedly Anthony was the weak link.

RECURRING CAST:
The producers did a brilliant job in creating and casting recurring characters. Ironically, their choices were better than some of their choices for the main cast.

STORY LINES:
Yup, there were duds, but just about every episode had a gem or two.
Favorites: Unexpected (Trip!); The Andorian Incident, Breaking the Ice; Silent Enemy; Shuttlepod One; Desert Crossing; Shockwave I & II; Minefield/Dead Stop; Singularity; The Catwalk; Cogenitor; The Expanse; Similitude; Proving Ground; Azati Prime; Damage; The Forgotten; The Council; Countdown; Zero Hour; The Vulcan arc; Observer Effect; The Andorian/Romulan arc; IAMD I & II; Demons/Terra Prime.

UNIFORMS:
Love ’em. Pockets + zippers + mission patches = a great nod to NASA!

SET DESIGN:
I love the NX-01. I love that it’s small, cramped and not a pristine environment. I love that it has minimal recreational facilities (tho’ a game room complete with poker table would have been a good addition). I love that from Azati Prime on, the ship was a mess and stayed that way. So realistic.

PRODUCTION VALUES:
IMO, the computer graphics on this show were superb. Enterprise looked like a real spaceship, the planets looked like planets and SPFX were also really good. Makeup not to great, but in fairness, what can you do when you’re limited to human actors? Perhaps after First Contact, Hollywood can expand its options.

MUSIC:
Apologies for overlooking this category. I agree that the instrumental work was excellent. "Faith of the Heart" was OK, but I think Scott should have done the vocals. And I love love love "Archer's Theme."

I forgot to list under "other": Andorians! Their look was really great, I loved the moving antennae - their makeup was certainly one of the best in the franchise (besides the Cardassians).

SET DESIGN:
I love the NX-01. I love that it’s small, cramped and not a pristine environment. I love that it has minimal recreational facilities (tho’ a game room complete with poker table would have been a good addition). I love that from Azati Prime on, the ship was a mess and stayed that way. So realistic.

OH yes, I absolutely love the ship. It feels like a real ship. For all the complaints about the tech being too advanced for pre-TOS the ship itself (inside) looks pre-TOS. It's got that slightly claustrophobic feel which is what it should have--DS9 had that as well.

"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times." I always think of the quote when judging the writing on Enterprise. When it was bad, it was bad. When it was good it was really good. That is why I consider writing to be among the best and worst things about Enterprise. So for that I voted story lines.

I also voted for Connor and Jolene. Connor pulls me in with his neighbor you call when you need help demeanor. IMHO Jolene played T'Pol better than anyone could have expected.

Oh, and Enterprise had the best effects of any series.

For me:

- A Mirror Darkly. This was the episode that settled most of my issues with the series being more advanced than TOS. It finally showed TOS technology as being superior to that in ENT and that the difference in various designs was more of a cultural thing. After this episode, my opinion about ENT changed dramatically, if not 180.

- Season Four. While others have dismissed the abundance of nods to TOS continuity as "fanwanking," I thought it was simply a case of making up for lost time. I wished more stuff like the Eugenics Wars and the different types of Klingons had been more evenly distributed throughout the series, but I thought it was great that the series did touch upon these things before it ended.

- Vulcans and Andorians weren't friends at first. The idea that Vulcans and Andorians were actually enemies at one point was great. The series in general implied that Humans played a big role in bringing the formerly disparate founding members of the Federation together.

- NX-01 Enterprise. While I initially disapproved of the ship as being a true predecessor of the TOS Enterprise, I thought the design on its own merits was excellent and truly looked and operated like something that could be built 150 years from now (assuming we had the technology).

- The United Earth Starfleet. While there's always will be a part of me that wished that they had used UESPA or even "Earthfleet Command," it does make sense from a certain point of view that Starfleet was very much an Earth-centric organization at first. And there really isn't anything that directly says that Starfleet wasn't established prior to the Federation...

-Ensign Travis Mayweather. I liked him (and Anthony Montgomery). He had a kind of Chekov-like quality to him in the sense something bad was always happening to him. Always wished they could have done more with him, though.

-Ensign Hoshi Sato (and Linda Park). I thought her character started off great as someone who wasn't all that keen to deep-space duty, but then once the novelty of that wore off, she kind of faded a bit.

-Jonathan Archer (and Scott Bakula). IMO, Archer was well suited for the series as a captain who was perhaps too much of a boy scout at first, but then learned some painful lessons later on. He would make mistakes that later captains would learn from, IMO.

Definitely the production values. Say of the series what you will, ENT just looked really, really good.

Oh, and Shran. Gotta love Shran.

I have been watching Season 3 lately and this is the year that really hit home for me. Maybe because of the 9/11 theme or the fact that it really made you feel for the crew's mission.

Sure, it was probably an attempt at copying the Dominion War to some extent, and sure, the lizard guys reminded me of the guys from Galaxy Quest... but I really thought they did a great job with this season, though.

In other words: Season 3 is definitely a reason for liking Enterprise, that's for sure.

Jolene. Although the idea of T'Pol getting hooked on drugs (or "Trellium-D", which sounds like something from a hair care advert) is ludicrous, her breakdown during season 3 was really well done. Oh yeah, and she's f--king gorgeous .

I loved season 3 overall. It was great. I couldn't wait for next week's episode.

I don't know. In my humble opinion I never was wild about Jolene's look on the show (except in the Mirror Universe episodes). As for her acting ability: I wasn't impressed (unfortunately).

I'm sorry, but I'm delighted to see it end.

But if I had to choose:

Archer, and Shran.

Our Dial-Up Friends? :vulcan:

Do they even exist anymore?? If so, then why accommodate them? This ain't 1996 anymore and they should get with the times, lol.

Anyways, I voted for Production since the modeling/animation/special effects and being in HD made it a lot more crisp looking then previous ST Shows.

Added:

Oh and the comments about Season 3 being really good..... while I still have yet to finish Season 1, from my experience of TNG, DS9 and Voyager.... Season 3 is usually the time when these shows take off, as they're done with the first season character development and the second season overall-plot setups, that they can delve right into the thick of the overall story and expand the universe the viewer is being tossed into.

It's not a matter of being backwards... Some can't afford high-speed and some live in sparsely populated rural areas where it isn't available. Count yourself lucky.

I was thrilled when the series aired. More Trek! I particularly liked "Affliction", which explains why TOS Klingons had no ridges and looked like scruffy humans.

Enterprise was a watchable show. It broke a lot of canon and it represented lazy writing and bad research. If one thing stood out it was the production values in unexpected. It felt truly alien on Ahlens ship. FOr the first time ever on Trek.

I chose other too- because the ending was the best thing. No not" These are the Voyages"- I mean that it ended. It made a mockery of trek and needed to put to rest in the non canon second rate show shelf.

Uhhh... because it's courteous? Because the board rules ask you to?

We are less stringent about the image size limits than we used to be, and if y'all want to turn this appreciation thread into a picture thread, you are welcome to post images the size of the screencaps you commonly see in the caption threads. But please don't post ginormous pictures that would stretch the page and take forever to load. Use common sense. If your image is huge, post a thumbnail and a link.

I've been under the assumption for years that I'm the last one. I'm accustomed to avoiding pictures and not being able to watch video, so no one need bother to go out of their way to accommodate me. ;)

Nope, you are not alone in this.
