What the Internet thought about Sisko in 1994

See, I find this interesting. I am a new ST fan and don't think fandom describes me. I like the shows, but I am not immersed in them nor do I participate in anything Star Trek other than this forum.

I have always thought of Star Trek fandom as being more evolved and progressive than the general public. I don't think I am alone in this. It has been eye opening to see that that is not necessarily true.

It is more evolved for the most part as far as labeled fandom goes. Most people like the idea's of Trek even if they themselves don't always live up to them. For some you can tell it's not the issues that are the big issue all the time but how the issue's are explored. Usually they prefer their social commentary to not hit so close to home. That's why even liberals can walk away from a movie like :Get Out" and be kind of uncomfortable when they find out the bad guys in the movie are actually, them. Same thing with conservatives. They can be find someone calling out organized religion okay but if you narrow it down to Christianity and then they are not so comfortable all of a sudden.
Plus you got tons and tons of crossover. I bet you half of the Star Wars complainers also double as Star Trek complainers as well. It's not like people only like one show or franchise that is out their.
Then you toss in the levels of just hardcore a fan is and how hardcore their racism or sexism might be. Usually even a racism and sexist has the ability to enjoy things that go against those things. It's why you sometimes have Trek fans or sports fans of leagues filled with people of color still be racist. A casual fan who is racist might just avoid the stuff all together yet still be just as vocal about it when they complain. That's why you sometimes see people complain about something and you suspect they proably didn't even bother to watch it to begin with. Granted that isn't just a racist or sexist thing but a common thing in general. I would say the argument that "DS9" was to dark or they didn't go anywhere wasn't racist or sexist or anything like that but they clearly were going off a impression of the show instead of something they actually watched. I think alot of sexist and racist complaints also work on that level. Impressions combined with the need to make a political rant usually are the worst ones.
