What The Hell Is Going On? (Re: Reviews)

StarMan

Vice Admiral

I have been optimistic about this movie from day one. Now that the time is at hand and the general media are witness to the film, I'm gobsmacked! It really, honestly seems too good to be true. All these 5 out of 5 reviews from the cream of the crop establishments are incredible. I would never have anticipated the current outpour of recommendation and positivity 6 months ago.

Did you?

One thing I COULD HAVE predicted - for every random thought that enters a poster's mind here, there will be a thread devoted to it!

just believe it. this movie is gonna make a shitload of cash.

EDIT: and you know why? I knew some of the spoilers (including a big one I'd learned from this board inadvertently). and yet, knowing it (or anything else) did not prepare me for the sheer spectacle and EMOTIONAL impact that is this movie (sorry about the bad grammar but so there) :p

Trek lives, baby. it lives. :)

What do you mean could? That was a given from the get go.
...and part of the fun! :techman: The rest of the fun is watching haters' heads explode in frustration!:rommie:

I am equally amused by people who substitute their anticipation about the movie for having seen and and enjoyed the movie itself. :D

Ah, but we can have both. :)

Not yet, you can't. ;)

Of course not. I have one thing I like now, and another later. I like it that life usually works that way (until it doesn't). Steak and baked potatoes topped with ice cream and hot fudge is messy and weird.

Not exactly my point.

I don't begrudge someone defending a movie they really enjoyed, even if no one else liked it. (Emphasis on the actually-having-seen-the-movie part.)

I'm pretty excited about Star Trek XI, and I will most likely enjoy it. But I haven't seen it yet. Nor have most.

Defending a movie that one hasn't seen is just as ridiculous as tearing apart a movie that one hasn't seen.

Why the hell do people care if the "haters" are proven wrong?

Was that really the goal of this film?

If it's enjoyable, smart, and everything it you expected or didn't expect it to be, is there any real reason to deride people for their take on it, especially when neither of you have seen it?

I'll end up seeing it, but not on opening weekend or a month afterward. I'm not paying a dime for this for a variety of reasons, but I'm not going to give my verdict on this film without even seeing it, even illegally. Regardless of my issues with the direction, management, and writing of this film, I have enough respect for the production crew and actors to give them a chance.

I'm sick of hearing that if I have problems with this film, I must automatically hate the entirety of Trek then. I love Star Trek, on the whole, as do most people here. Even though I wish the film wasn't made by specific people, in some way, I would like it to succeed in some way. Interest in this, hopefully, would spark interest in the original or the spin-offs, which is welcome.

Of course, if they do explore that and decide that it isn't as "cool" or as "hip" as the film, I could only say that it's their loss, and reveals more about modern culture than about the intent of the filmmakers or the quality of previous productions.

The critics love it, but I really don't think that means anything.

It's still called Star Trek, and that makes the average movie-goer head for the hills.

Didn't you know? No matter how cool ST actually is, it is considered UNCOOL to like it.

I figure we'll get an AWESOME movie that nobody but us Trek fans goes to. Hopefully I'm wrong, but I don't think so.

Trek wasn't always such an exclusive club. The hardcore trekkie stereotype has been around forever, but I think there was much more mainstream appeal for Star Trek during the TNG period. At least that's what I remember.

I think this movie is meant as a reintroduction of Star Trek to everyone else. Heck, I didn't watch Voyager or Enterprise. I thought they were contrived and boring for the most part, although I have a soft spot for Enterprise, not enough to watch it, mind you, but still.

I actually caught some of the CBS coverage from the Early Show, and I do feel you have a point there, Freman

Except for Harry Smith (who is the only professional of the lot), none of the anchors had any fucking idea of what the film was or what Star Trek was about. Julie Fucking Chen is MARRIED to Moonves, and it looked as if she didn't even have a memo on the basics when she spoke. The only time I saw Harry Smith (who's shown his inner Trekkie before) speak was when Dave Price fumbled around for "that language that they made up for the show."

Remember, this is CBmount's own show. They above all people should get their shit together for promotions like this.

I seem to remember the series premiere of DS9 getting the best ratings in Trek history (something like 20 million viewers) and that was for a syndicated show. So yes, Star Trek used to be mainstream.

All of this is pretty ridiculous, yeah, but it's much more fun to look forward to something than to be outraged by it.

They're obsessive, negative and annoying. It's been communicated to me that some folks enjoy seeing me proven wrong for similar reasons. :)

I think that you're both right and wrong...opening weekend I think will be majority of Trek fans going to see this movie...after the reviews really start rolling in and "everyday" people are buzzing about it I think others will then flock to the theaters. That is if the movie is in fact good. No matter what..... I'm sure I'll have some problems with it...it's not easy "letting go"...but as more time passes I'm having an easier time of it and I too want Trek to survive so at least there's an oppty for newbies to see TOS et.al......but that doesn't mean I'm going to like how they've manipulated my crew...I'm sure I'll be able to deal with some facets better than others....we shall see soon enough!
