What subjects should kids learn at school?

  1. English
  2. Maths
  3. Triple Science
  4. History
  5. Geography
  6. Art
  7. Design & Technology (Woodwork, Cooking or Textiles etc)
Physical education? no thanks, kids go out and play football and exercise anyway and school shouldn't be the place for it. The time used for a lesson of PE could be better spent in the Maths class.

Learning a foreign language? no thanks, it's a pointless waste of time. I learnt French at school and wasn't too bad but have I ever used it? have I ever needed to use it? NO!

Religious Education? No thanks, such education as this should be left to the churches or mosques or wherever.

Music? what a waste of time at school. If kids wanna learn an instrument they can do it at home. Kids need more time to concentrate on more important subjects. When I was at school music lesson comprised of sitting at a keyboard with a book and following what it said. USELESS!

What subjects do you think should be taught in schools and which subjects shouldn't?

Well I agree with your subjects, with the possible exception of triple science which is unknown to me. Although I certainly think PE and a foreign and language should be taught. I think all subjects should be taught if there is interest and money. They should be offered as electives, but yeah.

Pretty much what you said. Want to learn some thing else?, Send the to the library.

No particular order

Reading
Righting
Rithmatic

History (as unspun as possible)
Geography
Science

Parent/child choice:
Music
Art
Sports (phys ed, track, etc)

I'd also like to see some financial courses such as budgeting, investing and basic business courses by professionals who are willing to donate their time. (I'm sure there would be many people who would like to give to the next generation.)

A lot of these new Investigations and math programs need to go.

Reading
Writing
History
Math
Science
Basic trade of some sort
Basic first aid and outdoorsman skills.

^it's not just about weight...some kids are 'physical' learners. Some kids need to be able to run around. Phys. Ed. also covers 'health' and 'sex ed', which teens need.

Again, well rounded education.

I'm trying to understand how you can have art on your list and call music useless? I mean, it looks like your school handled music really poorly, which is too bad, but is that your only justification?

Grammar, reading & writing, math.

History cycling among state or territory, national, and world history.

Science cycling among biology, chemistry and physics.

For younger students: geography and for older students: civics

Learning a foreign language can be beneficial to learning more about your native language.

Some physical activity is good for children, but maybe they could get it by walking or riding bikes to school?

Opportunities for music, art, trade/shop..

I liked the "Exploratory" elective we had to take in middle school (7th grade I believe). You had one quarter each of health, technology/typing, art, and music. It gave you a taste of these things. For art and music, I don't think a year long class is really necessary since it seems like people are either into art/music, or they aren't. So really you just need to give a little introduction to it and if the kids enjoy it they can do it on their own from there.

English
Math
Science
History and/or Social Studies (depending on age)
Art and Music
PE
A second language.

Many schools in Texas have done away with PE, Art, Music, etc, and it's a disgrace. They barely teach them the basics, and now they're taking away all the other things that could actually contribute to a child's growth as an individual.

Also, there is no excuse for every kid in Texas NOT to know some Spanish. A huge segment of the population speaks it and we border Mexico. Many entry level jobs now require some knowledge of Spanish. We do them a great disservice by not insisting they learn at least the basics of it.

See, I think Religious Education should be taught, because it is a reality of our world. You would only be ignorant going into this world not knowing about all the world religions. For one thing, it helps us to understand current conflicts in the middle east, which are religious based.

I'm not saying preach religion, I'm saying teach religion. There is a difference.

^They can go to private school for that.

I am a huge supporter of PE being taught in school. Kids are getting lazier. They should at least have some time to run around and what have you, at school. Body and mind, and all that.

^They can go to private school for that.

Those that would learn it in private school would be more educated than the people in public schools then, sadly. I think, for a well rounded education, learning about religions of the world is important. It helps us to understand where people are coming from, history, origins, conflicts and how to avoid conflicts in the future.

There is nothing wrong with learning about religion, it is a reality of our world, and you will only be smarter learning about it.
