What specific aircraft was the Galileo rear landing strut from?

That's amazing - I never would have thought it was from an active service jet fighter.
 
This has to be the coolest Trekkishness I've heard this year. Thanks very much!

I wonder if Matt Jefferies had anything to do with getting this strut. Didn't he have some experience in the Air Force and the aircraft industry?
 
Matt would not have been involved with this in all probability. Gene Winfield ran this from Arizona.
 
It is neat that it was a real aircraft part. It just as easily could have been another thing made out of painted plywood, or welded-up pipe from a hardware store.
 
Galileo literally weighs thousands of pounds and people (and lights) had to be able to be able to go in and out. And sit at least has been viewed from the door. It needed a real frame. It is only held on three points so this needed to be a significant structural piece. She’s impressive.
 
I was thumbing through a book I have on the F-106 and came across this. Apparently the early model landing gears were prone to failure which probably explains why one was available for the Galileo

I think I did look at that video, back when this thread was first posted, and from it made this screencap:

The view in this and the view in the photo feek posted above are from opposite sides of the assembly, but it's pretty easy to identify many features common to both.
 
I figured, not hard to do since I only provided the links.

Again, my hat is off to B.J. for the discovery, and for noting the damage that does seem to fit with the info. in that F-106 book.

So who will be the first to find one for sale on EBay? :)
