What sort of Klingons are we expecting?

^ Their weapon is surprise. Surprise and fear. Fear and surprise. Their THREE weapons are fear, surprise, and a ruthless sense of honor. Their FOUR weapons are fear, surprise, a ruthless sense of honor, and an almost fanatical devotion to Kahless. Ah....amongst their weaponry are such diverse elements as fear, surprise, a ruthless sense of honor, an almost fanatical devotion to Kahless, and nice pointed bat'leths....I'll come in again.

given the information we got from ENT: Affliction and then the observation that Kang, Kor and Koloth were smooth-headed and then their ridges became asserted at a later date there's a number of interpretations for reasons why those Klingons affected with the augment/human DNA in their familial line could go through transformations like that.

looking up and down the timeline for "oh this is contradictory" is a rather narrow view.

some people IRL have skin and hair conditions where their hair will thin and then grow back, or their skin will lighten and and darken as it goes through phases of reacting to whatever the specific condition is. there's no reason to think the Klingon affliction is any different (and also no reason to accuse people with such condition IRL of violating their own personal "continuity" by undergoing any such changes)

i mean, Worf's ridges completely change between TNG s1 and later seasons - likely they can just regrow if they are bludgeoned (or just grow in general and need to be filed down by rigorous activity).

a young klingon with weak ridges due to a family history of ENT Affliction virus can probably grow to have more asserted ridges later in life (looking squarely at General Chang).

and a Klingon with strong ridges that undergoes a particularly robust series of headbutting barfights can end up healing with sharper or more bulbous ridges depending on how the shatter pattern heals. after all Klingons are designed for this kind of rough and tumble activity, why not accept that there might be aesthetic consequences

I 100% accept there their are aesthetic and phenotypical consequences. I 100% believe that Klingons went through a variety of different efforts to "remain Klingon" in the wake of the impact of the Augment virus. I truly think that everything from genetic engineering, plastic surgery to selective breeding occurred, as well as efforts to expand their borders and bring in more resources, resulting in more enslaved people's under the Klingon banner.

But, that's not canon. Apparently.

Is that like "Don't look in to the light."?

All of them

Ummm... I'm going to assume this was an unintentional omission and not a blatant show of cowardice!

We know that Doctor whats-his-name (Antak?) got the idea of cranial reconstruction surgery as soon as the viral thing affected millions of Klingons. But apparently the Klingon faction we saw in TOS didn't have that done.

And Martok outright stated that Klingons conquer other cultures. So they certainly have other species in their Empire. We just never, ever see them, or get any kind of indications that they might contribute to the Klingon gene pool.

Maybe we could just, you know.... not even do this. I mean, again with the Klingons?

One would imagine that it was earned, and that being out on the front lines, for the glory of the Empire, would allow for certain privilege.

With the specifics of TAS visual continuity now thrown into question from recent Strange New Worlds episodes I'm just going to say that the Klingons in TAS all had ridges.

My headcanon is this.

I brought this up and of the threads, so pardon me for repeating myself. The last time we saw the Klingons prior to The Vulcan Hello was at the end of the Enterprise duology that established the smooth heads being a result the Klingons experimenting with human augment genetics. At the end of that story, The Klingon doctor played by John Schuck speculated that cranial restoration surgery was going to become a big thing in the Empire.

So, when we see the Klingons a hundred years later with all of these bizarre ridges all over their body, I simply write it off as a Klingon version of body art, like tattoos or piercings. An attempt by a proud warrior culture to avoid being seen to resemble weakling humans.

Of course, I came up with this theory before Strange New Worlds was a thing, and I don't know where they're going to take the story from here, but my head canon is that the augment virus will see a resurgence sometime in the next decade, possibly caused by anti-vaxxers, anti-maskers or general science denial within the empire (ahem), resulting in the Klingons we see in the original series. Whatever cure they come up with this time will restore the Klingons natural ridges making the cosmetic surgeries obsolete.
