I'm kinda curious to see what the denizens of SciTech are using as far as smartphones go. I will probably be getting an Android next year, but I wanna see what the consensus is here, too. Answer the poll! Just pick whichever smartphone platform you are currently using.

If you use multiple smartphones, by all means, check the appropriate ones.

What do you think of Maemo? I honestly know nothing about it.

My phone runs Garnet, aka PalmOS 5, the last of the legacy PalmOS versions.

Well, it's my first experience with Linux, so while it is possible, I'm not yet doing a lot of the real geeky command-line stuff, but the GUI is nice, works real fast and with the exception of a few beta testing apps I've had no problems whatsoever and I have not experienced any drag when running many different apps simultaneously -yet, of course :rommie:

As I use Firefox at home so I also find the Firefox browser on Maemo great (with on-line sync of bookmarks, history, passwords and whatnot) -though it is a bit slower than the (Mozilla based) MicroB(rowser) it came with.

I have most of my media in FLAC and/or mkv, so the plug-in that allows the media player to play (most of) these is also one of the reasons for my choosing this device (plus the simple cable that enables me to use it as a media player that hooks up to a TV (or stereo system; but the FM transmitter usually does the trick when it comes to playing music over an external system) is something I've been using quite a bit)

I have a few widgets that I love very much: Search that enables you to add search engines from across the net (Danish Wikipedia, Danish dictionary, Memory Alpha, Urban Dictionary... (I think putting TrekBBS-Search into the search widget is the most geeky thing I have done yet, actually)) is very handy. I never Twat or FB, so I couldn't say anything about that, but I like the way IM and SMS (texting) is possible either through the preloaded conversation client or through, say, an aMSN client for Fremantle (Maemo 5).

Of course there are apps for monitoring/controlling the system, of which I am using some to get acquainted with the inner workings...

A more experienced user (like RevdKathy ;) ) might have more to say about the stuff I didn't get into in this post though, and if you have any more specific question: don't hesitate to ask here :bolian:

I have an HTC Hero with a custom ROM running 2.1 and a custom ROM for the radio. I really love it, especially since the phone was pretty cheap. I use Google Nav all the time, probably the single handiest feature of my phone.

It even came in handy at work today since I was trying to test a user's wireless connection on her laptop and I was able to create an adhoc wireless network with my phone in just a few seconds.

Does anyone happen to have an Android phone with Sprint service? The HTC Hero looks cool, but I really want to buy my phone separately from the service.

I do. Overall, I am really happy with service, especially since I get free roaming on the Verizon network. You might be able to get an EU GSM Hero to work on T-Mobile.

Switching carriers is not an option for me, unfortunately.

What carrier are you on?

I'm with Sprint and have a Samsung Moment, which runs Android. I'm happy with it. It's perfect for what I need it for, which is pocket internet and e-mail with occasional phone usage. (It's a great little computer ... it's a poorly designed phone.)

I have a BlackBerry right now, but plan to switch to Android 2.1 when the HTC Evo 4G comes out in a couple of weeks.

HTC/Google Nexus One. Had it since Feb, when I left AT&T (their lousy employment and their lousy oversold service) for T-Mobile. Just updated to Android 2.2 and Flash 10.1. It is sweet. Don't like the fact it preinstalls Twitter, and one of my widgets stopped working (they changed the calendar app, so the tie-ins that the agenda widget uses apparently aren't valid). Do like the fact it's silky smooth, even with all my crap installed on it.
