What should the IOC do to the Canadian women's hockey team?

^ It's a fucking medal. They are not getting sworn in as priests, receiving a Nobel Peace Prize, or being given a Victoria Cross. There is no great, sacred significance to a gold medal other than the fact it signifies you are a very, very good athlete. That's ALL. There's no reason why they shouldn't be allowed to celebrate receiving them in the same manner that anyone would celebrate winning, say, the Stanley Cup.

Do you know that some of the "normal" athletes from the NBA and NHL played in the Olympics, right?

I was waiting for someone to finally say "the Olympics are meaningless" and here I got 2 in a row!

I respect your opinions and won't argue against them. What bothered me were all the atempts to use logic (it's a double standard!) which didn't make any sense. I'll keep arguing against that.

But to just come out and say it's all pointless? I respect that and won't dispute your opinion. I don't argue against opinions, what bothered me were the people trying to have it both ways by pretending the games meant something but not in this case.

Saying that they DON'T mean anything is a consistant opinion at least. Thanks for that.
 
^ They do mean something, but no more or less than any other major athletic competition, be it professional or international. It's not that they're meaningless, it's simply that they are athletics—no more, no less, and certainly deeply meaningful to many people, but not worth any controversy over someone having a few drinks to celebrate a victory.

Nope, I don't get it. I can understand people who:

* Think the Olympic games and medals mean something deeper than what's on the surface and should be treated respectfully.

OR the people who:

* Think the Olympics are just one big reality show, corrupted by corporate sponsors and really no different than Survivor or some other reality TV show.

Really, I'm fine with both of those people. They both make sense to me, I can understand and respect both of those views. But I think you have to pick one or the other. What I don't understand is all the line-stradlers in here who want to pick and chose bits from each viewpoint.

I don't get it. I really think people should be in one of those categories or the other, but that's not what I'm seeing.

I mean, clearly it's my problem. Pretty much everyone else here is happily being both of these things at the same time, so the fact that I can't understand that is my own personal problem, apparently.
 
To be honest, SWC, I have no idea what you're trying to argue any more, or even why you argued against this in the first place, so I'm out.
 
He had won the gold, but the nature of the skeleton is to get the medal at a ceremony the next day. The nature of the ice sports are to be awarded right then and there.

Having the physical medal is no different than having won it. Drinking on televison, in the open/on the streets is illegal, yet he was venerated, and even got a gig on Oprah!

Women do it in a licensed arena, and are given hell for it.

I don't care in either instance-party on Montgomery and Women's hockey team! :techman:

I disagree. They definitely did something wrong, however small, so they shoud be punished with a spanking - by us.

Is that sexist? Maybe so, but more importantly it would provide a needed attitude adjustment. I also think that all female figure skaters could use an attitude adjustment. Is that sexist, too?

Let's lay it on the table. All hot female olympians should be snuggling in bed with TrekBBS'rs. There. I've said what everyone knows in there heart to be true.

And all those female runners, jumpers and pole vaulters, with their tight, toned bodies and their long, gorgeous legs, wearing those skimpy track uniforms -- they DEFINITELY need an attitude adjustment!
