Voyager seems to be to be a show of procrastination. Certain things were supposed to be done, made sense to do... but never got done. Growing Harry Kim is one thing, but this one seems more important because the Doc specifically requested a name, early on. And he got several very valid names over the course of the series and other places... but none seemed to stick.

Assuming that namelessness was NOT an option, which name do you think would have best suited him? We will include the name the producers said they were going to use but didn't.

After apparently decades of hand wringing I kind of thought "Joe" was perfect in Endgame.
Paris' incredulous response was perfect too.

Being Dutch, I voted for 'van Gogh' (though I'd prefer the Dutch pronunciation of the name, even if only to make things a bit more interesting) .

Seriously though,. I don't think any name on the list would particularly fit him. Of those names listed I'd say Zimmerman or Shmullus would still make the most sense in the context of his story, and I would suspect him to choose not Zimmerman as he would probably feel a need to differentiate himself from his creator, so in that case it would be Shmullus.

But really, most of us don't get to choose our name, and most don't care enough to change our first name during our lives, so he might as well let the computer make a random pick for him.

My first choice is Dr. Zimmerman, mainly because it seems to have been the original idea to call him that. In two of the early Voyager books, "The Escape" and "Violations", he is called Dr.Zimmerman.

But my name for him will always be: Dr Lewis Shmullus Schweitzer Zimmerman! :bolian:

You're missing the point. His real name's not important. The name he uses is what's important. It's a promise.

In "Blink of an Eye" the Doctor spends three years on that planet were time moves very slowly. He even had a son down there. Presumably the people there called him something other than Doctor, but he never even mentions it when he returns to Voyager.

That episode would have been a good excuse to finally name him. When he returned, he could have just told the crew that he'd gotten used to Schweitzer or Van Gogh or whatever and ask them to use it going forward.

Yeah. And, they could have had Harry start "Night" with lieutenant JG pips on his collar. They didn't do either.

I voted Zimmerman. But even that name leaves me torn, as it always seemed none of names they proposed for The Doctor never really fit him. Though Zimmerman does still symbolic meaning with him being named after his creator.
