Bought more music, inspired by listening to Lankum this morning. I only had their newest one and the One Leg One Eye offshoot until buying these:
Lankum: The Livelong Day
ØXN: CYRM
Poor Creature: All Smiles Tonight
ØXN and Poor Creature include members of Lankum and, to varying degrees, are Irish folk, though Poor Creature has some more modern sounds in the mix. There seems to be a lot of buzz about the current Irish folk scene, which, at least based on these bands, is as far from the old school traditional folk of relative purists like Planxty or well known outfits like the Chieftains as it is from the Pogues-inspired punk/folk stuff that's everywhere these days. Nice change of pace, if you like some drones and noise mixed into a darker, slower take on folk. This won't be blasting out of pubs while people get hammered on green-dyed beer on St. Patrick's Day.
