What Might Have Been

malchya

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
Okay, I'm fairly certain that I'm not exactly exploring new territory here, but I admit to a certain level of curiosity as to everyone's response.

In the early days of STXI fervor it was bruted about that Matt Damon was interested in the part of James T. Kirk. I can't help but wonder what the reception to the new franchise would have been should JJ have decided against an origin story and simply started in media res with Damon as a seasoned Kirk in the Big E's center seat.

I, for one, enjoyed XI very much. Save for a few (well actually more than a few) relatively minor issues and some aesthetic repugnance I came out of the theater bouncing with joy. But I can't help but wonder about what might have been with a more mature captain and, possibly, a more mature direction for the film.

Thoughts?

Well, if they put off production any longer, you'll get your wish of a more mature Kirk with Chris Pine. Certainly by the third movie. :)

Frankly, I still see Damon today and think, "Kirk." Abrams certainly would've used him. As I remember it, even Shatner thought Damon would be a good Kirk. He just didn't fit into the story they wanted to tell.

As it turns out, Pine's performance was the most pleasant surprise of the movie for me. He had the toughest job to do (even compared to Quinto doing Spock), and hit a home run. I look forward to him reprising the role in XII.

Actually it is getting to the point that just like many people thought that the Original cast of TOS were getting too old to do any more movies. But if they put off this ST2 any longer maybe this crew will be too old and we might have to get a younger set of actors.

JJ and co revealed in interviews a while ago that Matt Damon was actually only considered for the part of George Kirk.

With the exception of John Cho, they're all still younger than their original cast counterparts were at the time the TV series finished in 1969.

Didn't know that. Now I'm trying to remember at what point they said he'd make a good Jim Kirk. It must've been very preliminary and very early on. 'Cause they did, didn't they? Or, was it George Kirk from the start and they let the public think what it might?

Except for Cho, they're all still younger than when TOS first aired, right? Wasn't the second pilot shot in 1965? If so, if a third movie is shot in 2014, Pine would only then be just the same age Shatner was in 1965.

I think if you allow that Zoe Saldana is now pretty close the same age as Nichelle Nichols was when the TV show began series production (she didn't appear in the second pilot, right?) then the rest still works.

Eh. Matt Damon would have been Matt Damon. Better to get a relative unknown for a fresh take on the role.

But the real problem is, what actor of Damon's approximate age could have played Spock? Certainly nobody as good as Quinto.
