In my mind the Federation is made up of the following four areas;

Starfleet - This has four main organisations within it Command, Engineering, Science, Medical.
Agriculture.
Education.
Arts and Culture.

Federation also performs the day to day running of life, policing infrastructure etc. Would that be a fair assessment or have I gone rogue ?

Starfleet Medical would have a much larger civilian counterpart.

As would construction, engineering, science etc. etc.

I would probably be most suited to being a civilian freighter captain, but a Starfleet career might also work. If I could be an enlisted type, like Nils Pitcairn (the transporter chief from "The Cage") or O'Brien.

I mean, asking "What makes up the Federation?" is a bit like asking, "What makes up the Federal Republic of Germany?" or "What makes up the Federative Republic of Brazil?" or "What makes up Canada?" You're talking about an interstellar federal republic, an entire society.

I would imagine the Federation to be far more complex than any modern day major nation. And most modern day nations already are far too complex to be simplified down to just a few divisions (other than for perhaps a few purposely extremely schematic expositions).

That said, of the choices given, I'd probably join Starfleet, because my education and profession is in a STEM field and there doesn't seem to be any other place to go in the division you give (except perhaps Education, but I probably wouldn't be any good at teaching).

Which I honestly don't believe. Why would Starfleet be the only place to do science in as vast a society as the Federation must be?

Figure that kids probably just beam to and from school, or study from home. Ergo, my services would not be called for. So I'd probably go through a couple dozen crap jobs before my employment counselor finally gives up and suggests that since technically I didn't need to earn a living (because, you know, no money), maybe I should just stay at home and play video games. Depressed by this pathetic existence, I wind up spending my evenings guzzling cocktails at Sandrine's alongside Starfleet reject and fellow loser Nick Lacarno, before finally (in a drunken haze) starting a bar fight with a seven-foot Nausican. Since he doesn't have a knife on him, he simply rams a pool cue through my skull, and I'm dead before my knees buckle.

Arts and culture for me. Though things might get somewhat stagnant and boring within the Federation.
So I might venture outside Federation borders to try something different, and go into business on Regulus or on the Orion colony. :shifty:

Yup 100% he did, but looking at all of it like a hypothetical organisation and it's make up how would you create it for real or how do you envisage it being made?
Sentient beings/people make up the Federation. I would rescue Pike from that damn wheelchair and be shocked 23rd century medicine was so limited, if you can grow kidneys you must be able to cure paralysis. Then the two of us would open a bar on Risa
