- Something that expands on the "Star Trek" universe, instead of just trying to re-write it
- Some truly alien aliens
- A mixture of new and pre-existing characters (animation would make the problem of actors aging moot, as long as they can still provide voices)
- A NEW premise that takes the world of "Star Trek" FORWARD; for instance, exploring outside the galaxy, or just exploring distant parts of the Gamma and Delta Quadrants that Voyager and DS9 didn't reach.
This is right on. Because it would be animation, there would really be no limitations whatsoever in what they could do.
Thus, they could set it any time, use any character (actor age or death is now irrelevant), any designs with almost no restraint.
The original animated series understood this; because it was more animation, more aliens than ever before, who could truly look alien, etc.
Literally any story from Trek could be told in animated format.
Ah but "with great power comes great responsibility" though; such freedom should only be granted to those with a true vision, not someone merely looking to capitalize on the Trek name, which has become the current trend.
But to someone with a true Trek vision, animation is probably the quintessential way to visualize it in a universe as complex as Trek's.
