What Kind Of Opening Sequence Should There Be On New Series?

Ship comes out of warp, zooms by the screen as a blinding reflection of sunlight turns the screen white for a moment and as it fades we see the logo.

Then the ship explodes into boobs.

How about we just have a show with the Hawaii Five-O theme and call it "Risa Five-O?" Then we can have all the regular women doing those hula shakes intercut with some flying shuttles instead of airplanes?

I honestly believe that the way different opening sequence to Enterprise was a major problem for that series and hurt it in the ratings.

If a future Trek series features the Enterprise, I would like something like a fade in, fade out, montage of all the previous Star Trek Enterprises making an appearance.

Something to connect a new series to past shows.

Wait... weren't all the ships shown in the opening sequence of Enterprise... well... the enterprise? So in the same post you've said that it was a bad idea, but you want to see it? I am confused...

One thing I miss was the monologue from TOS and TNG. Now I don't really want to hear that one again, but I think the new series should have its own thing. We connect the words "To boldly go where no man has gone before" to the adventures of kirk and crew, but DS9, VOY, and ENT didnt have that.

ENT had the song, witch I thought was a good idea. And they picked a good song in my opinion. but I think they should go back to the old way.

I've changed my mind. For the new series I'd like a voice narration explaining what time period it is and what's going on. Also make sure to say that this is Star Trek. Then a rousing score while showing scenes with the cast. Finally the classic ship scene with a warp out sequence and a cut to the image of the Starfleet delta.

I'd rather the opening sequence be kind of brief, no more than 30-45 seconds. The title, the ship, a few planets maybe, and some variation of Alexander Courage's TOS theme in there somewhere.

Good question, Dayton3. I think that, if it features a ship, it should include more action and goodies displaying also foreign ships, eg. a battle between the ship which the series is about fighting together with a Klingon ship against a Romulan Warbird and a Borg cube which are fighting each other AND the two other ships simultaneously. That would be great. Although nobody would read the credits in that case :D

I remember a thread here which asked people to pitch their casts for the next Trek show and, when I created mine, I soon came up with the credit sequence in my head when listening to the soundtrack to Sky Captain.

It consisted of the camera pushing through a gaseous nebula as the Captain read the standard 'Space, the final frontier ...' opening (it was set on the Enterprise G) before coming across the ship - we'd get the title on-screen and then launch into some actual action shots of the cast.

So, kinda like a Trek version of the Atlantis credits.

Something with a symphonic theme. That "Enterprise" song was beyond awful. I mean, really, what were they thinking? It's one of the main reasons I couldn't get into the show, shallow as that seems. What the hell is "faith of the heart?" anyway. It sounds like something Trey Parker and Matt Stone would have come up with, like a parody or a something. Except that it was supposed to be taken seriously.

Perhaps the sequence could change for each season and have different actors from the show do the narrative while describing important events for each respective season. We could call it Star Babylon Trek 5 :D

Okuda Grams.

Have Okudagram art scrolling by all fancy and data-like. There'd be a square on one side that would have the various actors, walking through the ship, showing their name in the data as they appear. Ends with a shot of the ship flying, and the computer screen turns off.

The thing is, that kind of sequence is something that I think would be needed on new Trek to grab the attention, I think most agree that the 2nd version of the DS9 title sequence, actually showing stuff happening, was better than the 1st (well OK, I know technically 3rd, cos IIRC the Wormhole wasn't revealed in the credits for Emissary to keep it a "surprise").

Either that or go the BSG route, with a "This Episode" montage - but of course that may look a bit odd in a Trek Series.

Here's my 2¢

Good Stuff:
  • Pan across ship
  • Going to/Dropping out of warp
  • Generic maneuvering footage
Bad Stuff:
  • Long cast appearances
  • Sideshows
  • Excessive pans through space
  • History lessons

Maybe if Scott Bakula had done the singing -- he's a lot better than whoever actually did do the song. But seriously, no singing. Period.

I like Voyager's opening the best. It evokes the Grand Adventure feeling, and I often close my eyes and hum along with it... I love grand orchestral works that make me feel like I'm on a space journey. :)

VOY and DS9's opening sequence style is fine with me. No need to get fancy about that sort of thing.

Definitely no more ENT style. Blerg.

I think the Trek theme tune is as much a staple as the show itself, so I'd be loth to introduce the more modern idea of doing a quick flash of a title card (didn't SG-1 get down to this level at some point? They definitely made a reference to it in "200" as I recall).

Not sure about an opening monologue. Quantum Leap, TOS and TNG were examples of it being done right... Andromeda and Sliders came off as kinda cringeworthy I thought.

I'll also put my hand up to be in the outcasts brigade and say I enjoyed both versions of Enterprise's theme. Though I wouldn't recommend they did it again considering the controversy it caused last time.

The orchestral pieces are timeless, and so won't seem dated in 100 years when our good for nothing grandchildren are watching on holographic discs. So... I'd say go with another Voyager-style sequence, but slightly shorter. As a species our attention span is getting shorter all the t...
