What kind of new Gadgets do you think away teams could use?

Practical footwear, especially on Away missions

I remember a scene from "Fortunate", when the Nausicans were raiding the freighter to rescue their comrade. There were about half a dozen of them in a cluster, blasting everything in sight. And I remember thinking, one three-century old WW1 era grenade would wipe them all out.

So in addition to their phasers, a couple of programmable mini-bombs would be nice. Like the MACO's were packing.

Make them variable-yield, like photon torpedoes. Setting 1 just stuns everything in the burst radius, setting 4 will scorch the bulkheads but not much else. Max power is like the photon burst in Elite Force.

And yes, they should have a photon burst, too. Best Trek gun ever.

A backpack mini-replicator. Has a small amount of matter built in for basic tools and foodstuffs, and can also take planetside matter and convert it. More limited than the starship version, much fewer patterns, but would be great for an extended away team visit when their main ship is on a different mission and there is no shuttlecraft with them.

Basically you want the tool end of a Exo-Comp and have a truly "Multi-Functional" tool that can replicate whatever it is on the end that is needed.

Dispense with the exocomp brain. Or, make it less like Data's.

Or, don't. Instead of giving each ship a Data (as Maddox said)... give each crewman an exocomp, a portable assistant that can slip into small places, endure more hazardous conditions, and maybe make the occasional witty remark.

I'd prefer them to be more like Star Wars Robots and do less talking, make more chirping noises.

Not every robot needs to talk.

Not a bad thought. R2D2 was awesome. C3PO was about as cool as Jar Jar Binks.
BB8 was great,

BD-1 from Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order is super adorable and clings to your back like a small adorable animal.

In one of my fiction writings, I have a character who likes to invent weird gadgets, mostly from reading antique comic books / action-hero graphic-novels. Her favorite character was Batgirl, so she had a utility belt and a backpack to carry all sorts of flash-bangs, teargas marbles, and the like, including a six-inch "RC-car" with a flash-bang. She had a thing that fired a web out to block a Bad Guy from running up the corridor, and a tube of sealant to quick-weld a door shut. One of the high-tech idea was a bunch of little spider-bots that spread throughout the ship to relay sensor data back to a tricorder, so they could see where all the Bad Guys were anywhere on the ship.

They have flash/stun grenades in Star Trek Online. Also personal shields a'la TAS. Apparently Starfleet finally starts using stuff they've had forever by the early 25th century...then stops hard by the 32nd.

Why wheels? Shouldn't they use anti-grave drive?
Wheels would probably be more energy efficient than Anti-gravity drives if you have to cover the same distance and speed isn't a factor.

Which it usually isn't.

But Anti-Gravity drives would make a nice backup for wheeled vehicles if they get stuck in mud/snow or other terrain that creates a impasse for movement.

Oh I could think.....

  • Holo-reps: Holographic display makes an item as a person designs and selects materials, then a replicator makes it.

  • Holocommunications rendered in real time with mini projector, Subspace-cellphone type devices.
  • visually interesting tricorders.
  • *Not an away mission idea But, Holographic windows, no need to punch hole or transparent aluminum.
  • off road, enclosed vehicles for away missions.
