I read the first three SCE e-books and thought they were kind of simplistic and lame; does the series get way, way better than that as it goes, or was I just missing something?

There's so much love for it around here that I'm thinking of giving it another try, but it's honestly the only ongoing Trek series at all that didn't grab me in any way. I didn't even make it through the 4th e-book (the last one in the first MMPB); I was just bored. Should I give it another shot?

I'd say it's worth it. I was a bit unsure about the first story myself - the massive hotel ship filled with killer wasps or something like that? But I think it's definitely a rewarding experience if you stick with it. There's a good deal of adventure, action and decent character development.

Because the stories aren't that long, if you're not enjoying one, it's not long until you're into the next, and I've found there's always at least one plot line to keep me interested in any one story :)

Here you sink your own argument, Kevin. S.C.E. is published in paperback. So those "old fashioned" qualifications are being filled. Granted, it's not fully up-to-date in paperback, but using the old "I prefer paper" discriminatory comment (and yes, I consider it to be prejudicial as it's biased against an entire series and an entire group of Trek writers) doesn't wash when over half the series is out in paperback format.

:vulcan:

Terri - Your post seems to imply that if people like me would "get with the times" the series would have done better and would still be publishing new titles.

Imply, nothing. I've been flat-out saying it for years. Since there are no more eBooks, though, bringing up that old argument is really pointless, isn't it?

Of course, if we wanted to practice blameshifting, we could all blame Microsoft for thinking that science fiction readers would be the type to embrace new technology like electronic readers, bringing about the creation of S.C.E. to begin with.

I'm talking purely the paperback series here. Not the eBooks. Over half of the S.C.E. series is now in paperback form. If that doesn't qualify it as a "series" for you, I've got to wonder what would?

How do you define "series" for the purpose of this poll? Because obviously if you're going to leave one legitimate series out, it might be a good idea to have a reason why.

Granted the series is coming out in paper but how long after the ebook for do we have to wait from publication to paper? There was also no guarantee that they would be published in paper or even that the remaining numbers will see paper publication. You can call it a "prejudice" if you like but I call it a "preference".

And what's the difference between waiting for the next S.C.E. installment and waiting for the next Vanguard or Titan installment?

I allege that your "preference" shows discriminatory attitudes toward S.C.E. and its writers, thus making it prejudicial. There has never been a guarantee that any series is going to continue, so why is it suddenly a criterion for S.C.E. paperbacks? Why are you singling out one series?

Unlike many at least I did try the ebook format to see if I would like it! I still much prefer holding and handling a book. To me the experience is not the same using a reader. Yes the words on the pages may be the same but the experience is not. Plus I cannot add an ebook to display on my shelf with all my other Star Trek books.

But you've got S.C.E. in paper to put on your shelf with all of your other Star Trek books. Yet, somehow, this isn't enough to include it as a series like the "real" books? :vulcan:

Two or three years ago, you might have had a leg to stand on with all of this, but now? Not so much. Now it just looks like you're only considering real series to be those published in mass market paperback novel format. Would you also consider the "real" Trek writers to be only those writers who've published in mass market paperback novel format, too?

TerriO, I'm pretty sure that he didn't at any point say that he left SCE off the list because it was an e-book series, just that it was an accident. The post you quoted as being some prejudicial injustice was just him saying he was happy it was in print now because he liked the characters.

Well Terri if you want to think that I "intentionally" overlooked S.C.E. in the poll you are wrong but feel free to think that, but you would be wrong. At this point I could give a flip. As I have said elsewhere it was an oversight and I apologized for such. I think you're being a bit unreasonable about it. And besides I did list "Other" as an option so I had an out of I missed a series or two or three. I was not sitting in front of my library when I created the poll otherwise I would have included it. I see no reason for you to get upset with me just because your pet project doesn't spring immediately to mind. It just goes to show that, as I have said elsewhere, there are too many different Trek series and another series is not needed. So get off my case please!

Kevin

Shoot! I forgot about the Mirror Universe series and the Myriad universe series! I'll probably get called on that one too!

My favorites in order:
1.DS9PF
2.Titan/Vanguard
3.TNG Post-Nemesis (only counting Q&A, Greater Than the Sum, and Destiny)
4. I meant to vote for other two, but I hit the submit button before I realized I forgot about it. This vote would have been for the Mirror Universe, Myriad Universes, and SCE.
4. New Frontier

Not sure if you're being facetious here KRAD but I can think of one other "other" and that is the New Earth series. I suppose "Gateways", "A Time To" and "Section 31" books can be considered series too.
Everything listed in the poll is an open-ended series. The ones you listed in the post I just quoted were all miniseries with specific endpoints.

Having said that, 'tis true, "other" could also be Rihannsu (which did have an endpoint, but not a planned one -- then again, it was never planned as a series, either, it sort of fell into being one), Mirror Universe, Myriad Universes, or Challenger (for all that it only really had one book and one prequel).

I have a lot of favorites, really. The DS9 relaunch novels, the Terok Nor trilogy, the A Time to... books, TITAN, and Vanguard.

My favorite series is probably the ten Strange New Worlds volumes, simply by virtue of their sheer diversity of storytelling and voices and styles.

1- New Frontier
2- SCE
3- DS9 Relaunch
4- TNG Post Nemesis
5- DS9 TV series era

Happy KRAD.
I 'voted' SCE second.

The DS9 post-finale series gets my top vote. Titan would come in second. The TNG post-finale books have been uneven thusfar. I've only just started to read Vanguard (I'm slightly over half-way through the first book). The VOY post-finale books have been a trainwreck (though I have to say that "Full Circle" may change that). I don't read New Frontier, SCE, Gorkon, or anything else.

Oh, and in case anyone doubted the importance of Marco to the line? Titan, Vanguard, and DS9-PF were all started and "show-run" by Marco; the others weren't. And guess which ones are in the top three spots (minus Other, which is apparently 10 votes for SCE and one for Rihannsu)?

Just sayin'.

I'm looking forward to reading the adventures of the crew of the USS da Vinci in any future installments of Star Trek: Other. Though coming up with an abbreviation for that one sounds like a bitch. OTH, I suppose?

Why not just call it STO? Then we could have a "Final Frontier" miniseries we could call STOFF.

Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman

We could use Star Trek: Federation Universe as a blanket series title. Kind of a crap name, but I like the idea of STFU as a series abbreviation.
