I've been using Linux: Ubuntu 8.10 about 99% for my free time activities, though I run Vista: Business in the partition and I use Windows XP: SP2 at work.
I've made this a VERY simple poll with the understanding that there are too many variations to consider (don't be offended by a lack of representation, just reply with your specification). My favorite "free time" OS is definitely Ubuntu, with all the snazzy Compiz 3D effects enabled. I've even started tinkering with Wine which has limited my use of Vista that much more.
What I particularly love about Ubuntu (once you get past the rather painful process of compatability) is the synaptic package manager and the diverse array of free and simple utilities and games that you can download and manage so easily. Then, there's the speed and security of the OS. It has everything I need for home use, from Pigeon (IM client like Trillian), to xchat, FireFox, Open Office, Skype-- not to mention a great number of small, unbloated sidebar tabs from weather management to alarm clocks. Gimp is Great. Wings3D runs like a gem (for those of you that 3D model) and the system never gets spyware/viruses and it never crashes. It's a wonder that more people don't delve into Linux OS.
I've become a bit of an Ubuntu-head since I started.
