I've been using Linux: Ubuntu 8.10 about 99% for my free time activities, though I run Vista: Business in the partition and I use Windows XP: SP2 at work.

I've made this a VERY simple poll with the understanding that there are too many variations to consider (don't be offended by a lack of representation, just reply with your specification). My favorite "free time" OS is definitely Ubuntu, with all the snazzy Compiz 3D effects enabled. I've even started tinkering with Wine which has limited my use of Vista that much more.

What I particularly love about Ubuntu (once you get past the rather painful process of compatability) is the synaptic package manager and the diverse array of free and simple utilities and games that you can download and manage so easily. Then, there's the speed and security of the OS. It has everything I need for home use, from Pigeon (IM client like Trillian), to xchat, FireFox, Open Office, Skype-- not to mention a great number of small, unbloated sidebar tabs from weather management to alarm clocks. Gimp is Great. Wings3D runs like a gem (for those of you that 3D model) and the system never gets spyware/viruses and it never crashes. It's a wonder that more people don't delve into Linux OS.

I've become a bit of an Ubuntu-head since I started.

I have a system running on Linux but I tend to use this laptop which is Windows Vista. It's what everyone I work with uses, and I've used windows since I first logged onto a computer, so it's nice and comfortable for me.

I used Mac's when studying journalism and hated them. I've only ever used them again when I managed a nightclub and forced my tech guy to be the sole operator of any Mac - which was a blessing to him as I wasn't breaking anything...

Ubuntu has been my primary home OS since 6.06 (Dapper Drake). It's highly customizable, plenty of free software available, no hardware compatibility issues that I've found, easy to install and upgrade, and of course the OS itself is free.

I also keep XP around for special occasions, but I rarely use it more than once every three weeks and that's mainly to make sure my antivirus definitions are up to date. Some habits die hard, I suppose.

I haven't used anything other than windows in about 8 years.

I used to love my Mac back in the day, though.

For my free time... either Rhapsody or OPENSTEP. I have two systems running Rhapsody (a Power Macintosh 8600 and a PowerBook G3 Wallstreet running Rhapsody 5.6) and two running OPENSTEP (a Sun SPARCstation 10 and an IBM ThinkPad 760 ED running OPENSTEP 4.2). Not only do I still enjoy using those operating systems, I also help out others who are only now learning about them by maintaining a couple websites devoted to information about them (here and here).

Of course in the end an operating system is only as useful as the applications you have to run on them... and fortunately I have tons of apps for both. :techman:

I don't know what it's called, but it speaks with the voice of Majel Barrett.

Since getting a PC way back when, I've pretty much only used Windows (currently XP-SP3).

I plan on trying others (and would like to try a Mac at some point). It's just getting round to it.
