What is your best investment ever?

Mine is my LASIK. It's been 2 years and I sometimes forget how much easier my life is now because of it. I can swim and run without being either half-blind or uncomfortable. :techman:

A 2003 Ford Focus - wasn't thrilled about it one bit when I bought it, but it sure has lasted... Not a cool car, but solid and reliable. Since I've lost money on every house I've ever owned, I have to go with the car...

My best investment was done on my behalf by my grandmother back in the mid-70s just before she died. She was in an investor group that invested some venture capital in a small, start-up computer company that was being run in a garage that is now known by the name of Apple, Inc. and she left it all to me.

Unfortunately, my short-sighted, dim-witted, con-man, asshole of a birth father got his hands onto it after she died when I was still a little kid. And he liquidated those holdings to the rest of the group for what was pennies on the dollar then. Holdings that would have been worth millions of dollars only a couple of years later. If he weren't already dead...

A collection I purchased for a fair-to-slightly-low price nine years ago has netted me a part-time job and income of over five times what I paid for it as well as increasing in value. Better, I bought it for my own pleasure and never dreamed that it would end up so well. Best, I still have the collection to enjoy.

Too bad no one told you that after 20 years, your eyeballs fall out!

Probably my toaster oven. Does a much better job at broiling than my stove. I've probably made 200 steaks with it.

Buying a (pretty crappy) bicycle when I was 17. If I hadn't done that maybe I still wouldn't be riding a bike now and that would a real shame since it's such an efficient and fun way to get around.

My initial reaction is to say "my home", but given that its value has actually depreciated as a result of the economic collapse, I can't say that it was the smartest decision (clearly I should have waited another year or so before deciding to buy a place). I would say that some good investments include my first DVD player (bought new in 2001, still going strong today) and my iPod.

You know, I'm not entirely sure. I've made a lot of good investments across a range of different areas, from actual financial investments through other assets and onto more metaphorical "investments".

But while those are all "good", I'm not sure any one of them is good enough to qualify as being a "best". I guess that says someone about me and the kind of investments I tend to make.

My best investment was financial. Back in the 70s when I turned 21 I purchased a whole life insurance policy. I made monthly payments on it for only six years before the returns and interest earned were enough to cover the monthly premium and keep the policy growing. And boy did it grow during the 80s and 90s. As a result I've had 100K+ in life insurance for most of my adult life without having to make any payments. Best of all is that beginning at age 62 (which isn't that far away for me) I can begin drawing down the balance over 100K as a tax free monthly check to supplement my 401K and Social Security.

I didn't do too bad with my house either. I bought it new in the 80s at the tail end of a recession when land and building costs were low. The real estate collapse has affected me as well, but only to the point of it being worth three times what I paid for it instead of four. And now, with the mortgage paid off, every dollar of that is mine.

I was tempted to say Windows 7, but I've only had it a few months. I really, really like it though. Very fast. Not a single crash since I installed it. The new taskbar is sexy.
