What is wromg with these people?

Today the temperature in some areas of Victoria reached 45C (113F). The temperature in Melbourne itself was 43.6 (110F). Despite that fact that it was so obviously hot paramedics were called out 4 times to treat children who had been locked in cars. What is wrong with these parents? If they are stupid enough to leave children in cars during a heat wave aren't they far too stupid to be parents in the first place?

In case amyone is interested the temperature in Hobart only reached 37C (98.6F).

People are stupid, all over the world.

(By the way, it's 7F in my location. That's -14C. Suffice it to say, your post made me jealous. Poor kids and all, but wow, 113 sounds nice. That might actually thaw me out.)

Who in their right mind would live in 45C (113F) heat? Can people even survive exposure to that kind of heat for a long period of time?

Millions of people have been flocking to Phoenix where it gets that hot half of the year.

Yeah, 113 is nothing. Try the parts of Cali and Nevada where it hits 125-130, easy. Once when I was in Las Vegas, it was 136. THAT was hot.

About 374 people died in the South Australia/Victoria heatwave in January 2009. The Australian Medical Association is now calling for free air-conditioners to be given to all public housing tenants tenants over the age of 75.

That 374 death toll excludes the 173 people who died in the bushfires that accompanied the heatwave.

Adelaide had a heatwave in November which is very unusually.

It has gotten that hot in Illinois plenty of times (although not the past two summers...we didn't even get a single 90F day this year!). It's annoying, but you can certainly live in it.

I swear people who live in those kind of environments are crazy :wtf:

But then again, I'm one of these redheads with a melting point of roughly 30C :p

Meh, I live in Midwestern USA. The weather here goes from -30F to 110F throughout the year. I can handle anything.

This is so rare that it's almost not even worth mentioning. It's not normal for the temperature in that area to get much above 120.

Once when I was in Las Vegas, it was 136. THAT was hot.
I hate to break it to you, but the highest temperature ever recorded in North America was 134 (July 10, 1913), and it was not in Las Vegas (Death Valley, CA).

In fact, the hottest temperature ever recorded in Las Vegas was 117, most recently on July 19, 2005.

Who in their right mind would live in 45C (113F) heat?

Well, there are almost three million people in the Greater Phoenix Area who put up with that level of heat for a few weeks every summer, but I don't know exactly how many of them are in their right mind. ;)

Can people even survive exposure to that kind of heat for a long period of time?
I give a qualified "yes", contingent on "it depends on what you mean by a long period of time". Even in Phoenix (despite popular perception) we only have a few days every summer where the temperature goes above 110, and even then it's only in the afternoon.

I'm not going to argue with you. I know what the thermometer in my car said. I'm sure it had to do with sitting in traffic on blacktop more than anything, but it was still extremely f'ing hot. If the "official temperature" was not 136, then it was certainly within several degrees, and certainly much hotter than 113. And temps in the 120s aren't at all uncommon in the CA/AZ desert. Happens every summer.

As Spock once said, "that would be wise". :vulcan:

I'm going to say that your thermometer is seriously miscalibrated or you are misremembering. Those are really the only two options.

and certainly much hotter than 113.
If you were in Vegas, not much hotter than 113 at all, since 117 was the record.

Yes, 121, 122, maybe, every year. 125 to 130, very rare.

I've lived in Arizona for over thirty years, I'm not ignorant of the climate here.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again.

Our best medical and scientific minds need to find a 100% guaranteed reversible sterilization procedure and a 100% guaranteed non reversible one, for both sexes.

At birth, all babies need to be sterilized.

At the point of one's life where you are with a partner and wish to have babies, you need to apply for a license. To obtain this license, you must go to parenting school. This school will be intensive, possibly years, and include courses not just in child rearing, but also in ethics, the effects of bad parenting and "stupidity" on future generations, the responsibility of parenthood and the need for community help and financial means for raising children. People will be tested, and anyone getting less than 85% do not get children.

Upon passing, both male and female will have their sterilizations reversed, and will be allowed up to 4 children. After that, they must submit for permanent sterilization.

Smarter populace, over population goes down.

Anyone caught breaking these rules or working around the system face extensive fines and/or jail time.

:)

Maybe we should make the final exam really fucking hard so that only folks with blonde hair and blue eyes can pass with ease.

Jail time for trying to have a baby...

Oh, so only people with blonde hair and blue eyes would be able to pass a really hard exam?

I had no idea you were so racist.

If that's what you got from my post, then you obviously didn't understand. I hope your baby test doesn't come into being before you have kids.
