What is the Red Button?

Fair enough. Doesn't change anything, however. They are still a unified source...
We do have competing networks here too, ITV, Channel 4 and Five, plus cable, satellite and digital TV channels... but then I guess most of them don't use interactive TV either.

Sure. I just wanted to make sure no one was under the impression that Gordon Brown could call up Steven Moffat and tell him to have the Doctor land the TARDIS in the middle of Whitehall and do battle with the evil Dalek-Tory alliance. ;)

yes Torchwood: Chlldren of Earth, shows that the BBC has enough independence from the government

Oh, I dunno about that. I thought PM Green was probably a Tory. ;)

well PM Harriet Jones didnt work out so well, and I always figured she was Labour.

not to mention people from both sides jumping ship for Harold Saxon, however they did get what they deserved for that, that maybe the best thing the Master ever did.

um, Harriet IS Labour. she says she was one of the 'Blair babes', the large number of female MPs who came into Parliament in 1997.

Actually, she said that she's "hardly one of the 'Babes' " in explaining why the PM hadn't been willing to meet her.

I always figured Harriet Jones was Labour, especially given that RTD based her in part on Harriet Harmon (not too well based on her since I like Harriet Jones however ;) )

I figured Green was Labour as well actually. Although somewhat posh it's worth noting that Blair had more of a privillidged upbringing than either Major or Thatcher, and there's definitely something of Labour spin about Green's government...oh and he's named after a colour as well whcih is another possible clincher.

in what way was she like that that bit of filth I wouldn't spit on, if she was on fire?

Honestly, I always figured that Harriet Jones was Lib Dem. She said that she was "hardly one of the 'Babes' " in "Aliens of London" in explaining why the PM hadn't been willing to meet with her (before the Slitheen killed him), implying that she wasn't Labour, and, well, I just can't imagine RTD writing an admirable Tory MP.

I'm curious what the "Labour spin" about Green's government was. They seemed to go out of their way to make Green as deliberately non-partisan in his evil as possible.

It always seemed quite obvious to me that Harriet was from the same party as the PM (Blair?) killed by the slitheen. The line about hardly being a babe I figured had more to do with Penenlope wilton being no spring chicken (Sorry Penny!)

Well, a hell of a lot of Blair's Babes weren't spring chickens themselves, so I don't think that's likely. Again, she said that she was hardly one of the Babes as a way of explaining why the Prime Minister had refused to meet with her in the past -- hardly something you'd expect from a fellow Labour MP. I really see no reason to assume that MP Jones was from the PM's party, or that she was Labour.

I just figured it meant she wasn't one of the PM's favourites, rather than she wasn't in his party.

That's possible, too, but I still don't see evidence that she's from the PM's party.

Apart from the fact she apparently took control of the party and government.

The Doctor asks her if she won the election in "The Christmas Invasion," and she replies that she had a landslide victory.

So the fact that she later becomes Prime Minister is evidence of nothing other than that an election was called.

I seem to remember something about her being the most senior MP by the end of World War 3, but I may be wrong.
