Spoilers What is the reason for the Borg artifact? Possible spoilers.

There might be spoilers for those who aren't caught up yet. Just want to warn you now so no one screams at me.

I was thinking about this as I was wrapping up the recording of my podcast last weekend. We were discussing how the story was wrapping up for the season and what we all think it's building toward. This ultimately led us to start wondering what the reason for the Borg artifact was. I feel like there's something I'm missing, but, has it/will it contribute to the story of the season? Or is it just simply a place to serve as a setting for Soji and to set up Narek, and Rizzo?

The way I see it, it has contributed in several small ways.
  • A market for salvaging and selling Borg technology
    • Which led to Hugh, Icheb, and Seven's appearances
  • The plot device to establish Soji, Narek, and Rizzo
  • The assimilation of the Zhat'Vash agent, which ultimately led to the cube's shutting
  • Establishing some treaty between the Federation and Romulans (which still isn't completely clear to me)
Aside from these, have I missed anything? Has the Borg cube had a more critical contribution to the season that I completely missed?

I still feel there will end up being some sort of connection between the synths and Borg, like, the civilisation that made the synths also created the Borg.

The Borg might be around for a very long time. Perhaps they are the ancient enemy of the species or entity that the admonition may have warned against.

Could be that the enemy is a synthetic species or an artificial lifeform, considering the way Locutus treated Data in "Best Of Both Worlds".

Synths, Borg, Control, V'ger, all the same. With time travel and USS Discovery at the center of it all. And you thought Boringham was bad now. Just wait until she becomes the first Borg Queen :borg:

Maybe we'll finally get that V'ger connection we always wanted!

Thematic contribution.

One theme of this series seems to be how we deal with trauma. We see how xBs struggle for identity and how largely hopeless their plight is. As things are wrapping up, we see Seven free the Cube from Romulan control. What comes next? That remains to be seen.

Another theme of this series, though, has been the tendency of people to see other people as things. We see this in the main plot, naturally, but we also see it in how the Borg are mined for parts, mutilated, and sold on the black market.

I wouldn't at all be surprised if the Cube becomes a critical part of the finale, but to my mind the point of the season is mostly about trauma and how we recover from it, and the Borg are already relevant as a form of commentary.

i think the borg stuff has been pretty thin and poorly developed *so far*. stewart said he didn't want the borg in the show unless they did something truly unique with them, so here's hoping they play a more integral (and interesting) role in the next two episodes.

there are still a lot of cool borg stories to tell, star trek: picard has only dabbled in concepts.

Incompetent commanders.

I have images of Captain Seven doing the Patton thing and getting in these drones' faces for allowing the cube to fall into the hands of the enemy.

I'm kind of with you on this one, which is why I'm wondering what it's in the story for. Originally, I thought it might've been in there because the Romulans became an endangered species as a result of the destruction of their homeworld, so they found this cube and claimed it as theirs as a way of scrounging for resources.

And on a related note, it's still not totally clear to me what the overall status of the Romulans is. It's as if the destruction of their homeworld had almost no effect on them, as a species. We saw the refugees in episode three, but, are there more planets like that? Is that, the Tal'shiar and the Zat'Vash (sp?), and those on the cube all that's left?

It occurs to me the Borg are pretty ancient (thousands of centuries, Guinan said) so maybe Maddox, trying to unravel this conspiracy, thought they might have knowledge of whatever happened to this civilization that left the warning behind, and that's why he sent Soji there. That implies that Maddox had some knowledge that our heroes haven't been privy to until just now, but if he spent time on that android planet then that's totally within reason.

I think that's ambivalent on purpose.

What if the Synths were created to stop the Borg.
Data eventually resisted the Borg Queen's overtures, perhaps if he had known his true "purpose" she wouldn't have even got that far?
