Here are the facts: warp drive is clearly different in this NuUniverse, the ship, operations, technology isn't the same as the Prime timeline.
- on their way to the Laurentian system, Sulu comments that they're at warp 3; to which Spock replies 'Thank you Mr Sulu'.
- Chekov later mentions the line "If Mr Scott can get us to warp 4....."
There are two ways of thinking:
- Abrams changed the warp scale, like he changed many other things. Perhaps making warp 3-4 the maximum to limit the cheesyness of having a scale from 1-9. He is trying to make the franchise 'cooler' and more modern after all. It could be similar thinking to today's Mach 3, Mach 4 way of measuring speed. The Enterprise normally can run up to warp 3, but higher velocities can be milked out of the engines every so often.
- Damage from the battle with the Narada limited warp drive, making warp 3 the Enterprise's maximum temporarily.
In truth, it's impossible to know. Both are possible. But I was curious what people thought. No where is it stated that engines were damaged by the battle so believing that to be the case would be guess work.
Now for the goof. Since I saw it again tonight, I noticed that while they're discussing the plan to emerge from warp in Titan's atmosphere... Chekov speaks about potentially getting the engines up to warp 4 (as discussed). Only problem is, there's a nice big "Warp factor: 4.33" indicator that keeps fluctuating slightly at the top of the window/viewscreen. Oops. That's the benefit of seeing it for a third time, you can watch what's happening in the background
