What is Lucas up to?

I think part of the reason the Zahn novels (and Dark Horse's Dark Empire) were initially popular was that they came out at a time when the future of Star Wars as a film franchise was uncertain, and there hadn't been a licensed continuation of the series since the Marvel comics were canceled in the mid 80s. These days, where Star Wars is still oversaturated, they don't seem that special (Although they are among the better Expanded Universe and have certainly aged better than Dark Empire).

Some people credit Zahn's trilogy with reviving interest in Star Wars, and leading to the special editions/prequels. Although I actually think it was the CG SFX revolution that made Lucas return to SW.

I'd agree with this. Zahn's novels were the first Wars books I ever bought. At the time they were being hyped as the "unofficial" continuation of the movies. On top of that a friend of mine saw that I had them, borrowed them, and loved them so much he never returned them. Pissed me off too as I had the hard cover versions! :klingon:

I think the Zahn Trilogy holds up really well, I end up re-reading it every few years. It's just so well written; every chapter really hooks you, and the story and the action and the mystery and the calculating masterminds of Thrawn and Karde and the rivalry between Luke and Mara... great stuff! I also still love Dark Empire as it feels more 'filmic' than ANY of the books, even if it does invalidate the ending of ROTJ. Plus that art is AMAZING.

Keeping his hands off The Clone Wars, I hope, which has actually turned out better than I expected.

I'd actually like to see the Clone Wars team tackle the Han Solo novels - just need a little better animation for wookies.

Why ? Is he not involved in The Clone Wars ? I haven't really followed it.

Or is this a case of we credit him all the bad SW but refuse to credit him any good SW ?
