What is it about Youtube that shuts off people's brain cells?

It seems like only half of people on Youtube actually bother to read the video description. So I get dozens of people asking the same questions in the comments. Questions that are answered in the description quite clearly, even without clicking to read more.
If you can find the time to write a comment, surely you can find the time to read the description first, right? That's why it's there.

And need I even get started on the intelligence of the average conversation on Youtube? It degrades to childish insults without provocation. This much is not new to anyone. I even had one guy send me a personal message that consisted of little more than "F*** YOU" repeatedly because he didn't like the general consensus of the comments of other users. And it was nothing even remotely related to him anyway. Why take such offense to the point of personally insulting the uploader? Isn't it enough to comment on the video and leave it at that? I try to just run with it and let people express whatever opinion they want in the comments, but some users just make it impossible.

I just don't get people sometimes. Thank god Youtube gives the video uploader full power to block users and delete comments.

The comments on youtube are probably the biggest concentration of human stupidity outside Palazzo Chigi.

^ Yep. I watch a lot of wrestling vids and clips on youtube and almost a good 90 percent of the comments there are people just ripping apart John Cena (one of the WWE's top babyfaces). Just saying the most vile and stupid things you could ever possibly read. It's revolting.

People on Youtube always comment about the current trend/fad of a topic, regardless of whether it's even relevant specifically to the video. Doesn't matter if you're watching Mexican midget wrestling, I'm sure you'll see a comment about John Cena, because that's what is known to people currently familiar with wrestling, even though it may have nothing to do with the video.
I see it a lot on my more popular videos. You see everyone will make the same comments for a couple of weeks when something happens related to your video's subject matter, even though it has little to do with your video in reality. Then something new happens, and everyone will make comments about that instead. I find it really tiring, and it comes across as uninformed and displays limited knowledge. Such is Youtube.

The handful of videos I have on YT...I don't allow comments. :p

To be fair, I've come across lots of great and sometimes intelligent comments that go some way to making up for idiots...but the bile on some (especially music videos) beggars belief...

I think those people on YouTube, and their relatives on IMDB, had their brain cells shut off long before their first post.

I am such a fan.

I wouldn't say YouTube was for the Braindead.

Well, for starters, YouTube seems almost like a magnet for people who cannot spell or punctuate a sentence properly to save their lives. I have read comments on there where I have no idea whatever what the person is trying to say, because their spelling and grammar are so terrible. And no...I am not talking about non-native speakers. I am talking about native speakers.

And then there are the insults, the flaming, etc. - at the uploader, at other people who comment, or even at other artists who have nothing to do at all with the video or artist at hand. And the flames are more often than not hatespeak - crap like "Hey motherfucker - u r so gay!"

I mean, what the fuck? :wtf: Who talks like that? Or more specifically, who talks like that and thinks they are actually impressing anyone with their 'arguments'. Tell me again why I should be swayed by the irrelevant rantings of a bigoted jerk?

I know that the crowd tends to be younger on YouTube (at least on the videos I care about - hard rock/metal) than on other sites I frequent...but do they not teach spelling in school anymore? Basic grammar? Debating skills?

Posting there sometimes really makes me wonder about the future of our civilization. Because a scary-high percentage of the comments on YouTube truly must have been written by utter morons who are not even capable of formulating a complete thought, let alone communicating it to others. I mean, if the best they can come up with, by way of a cohesive 'argument' is "Fuck you, motherfucker! U r so gay!"....well, seriously....the world is in a lot worse shape than even *I* imagined. And I imagined it to be in pretty piss-poor shape already!

Seriously - although this is meant as a joke, it's actually fairly accurate by way of illustration of a typical comments section on YouTube. All it is missing is a couple of flames (usually involving bodily fluids or solids) directed at either a) an unspecified person who may or may not have posted in the comments section earlier, but who is a mystery to anyone reading the flame - including the flamee; b) a specified poster who posted their comment 4 1/2 years ago and who hasn't been back to the video since; c) the uploader, apparently for posting a video at all...despite the fact that this is the whole POINT of YouTube; or d) Justin Bieber.

Anyone know what happened to that software project from a couple years ago that was studying YouTube comments in order to learn to automatically filter out stupid and offensive comments?

I'd be happy enough if they just bothered to automatically filter out the spam, let alone the real people. It is so infuriating to have the exact same spam templates every single day, and Youtube has no proper way to directly report a blatant spam account, despite the fact all of them have the exact same user text template that would be easy as hell to instantly block. Seriously, they could literally block 99% of spam accounts on Youtube in one swift swoop if they bothered to do this, but they don't.

I can't stand the comments on youtube, i can't read them, full of stupidity and nonsense. I think youtube really shows how many dumb people there are in the world who just want to be loud mouthed and get noticed.
