What is a Hyper Spanner?

I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of the interlocking SF does is via magnets... not nuts and bolts.
Ideally SF probably may have found a way to use magnets in such a capacity that locks them in a given state. We heard of 'magnetic interlocks' for ship's hull plates for example.

The hyperspanner could be a tool for manually decoupling of magnetic interlocks (among other things) and performing manual maintenance (if automation is unavailable).
