What if... William Shatner had done a fan film?

But I do also believe he hasn't had a script put in front of him that he thought was any good. They really painted themselves into a corner by killing Kirk in Generations in the manner that they did as there really was little wiggle room to conjure up a plausible return. And, of course, as time has gone by and things have progressed it's become ever more fanciful.
That's the thing.......I wonder why he ever said YES to Generations and let Kirk be killed off in such a horrid way.

I think in one of his memoirs he stated, similarly to Nimoy, at that point it seemed a good way to close the chapter on the story of Kirk and perhaps a way of not just leaving the character unfinished for ever (personally and being objective I think The Undiscovered Country was a perfect finale but I would never say no to more Kirk!). As we know, Nimoy had second thoughts and I'm sure if Shatner had known how things would pan out he would've liked to return in some of the productions that have appeared since 1994. I also think that as Shatner was 62 when Generations was being filmed he may have believed his acting career was pretty much done so why not retire Kirk for ever too?

Oh, also Money.

With Nimoy it was always something more that had to coax him back as Spock throughout the 80s - he wasn't going to be in Star Trek: Phase II but they signed him on for TMP; he got killed off in STII but because Nimoy directed 3 and 4 so he was revived; Shatner directed trek5 and Nimoy was involved in the story for 6 [filmed April to July 91]. Unification was shot in September 91, presumably Leonard did it to promote the movie. He agreed to JJ's film 19 years later as he felt Spock gave a decent contribution to the story. The Into Darkness cameo was presumably out of courtesy.

Thinking back to 1994, Shatner probably thought Generations would be a nice handover to TNG. That was the point, the handover from Kirk to Picard. In his 60s her probably thought there wouldn't be another opportunity to play the part again. ST6 I agree was a great send off and Roddenberry's final Trek project, most of the original 7 have been back since in one way or another! Maybe Shatner didn't anticipate living into his 80s? Times change.

He turns 86 this month - I do admit seeing Shatner looking visibly older in the Starfleet Academy videogame and the Oscars sketch is a bit weird. He is involved in so many projects now on TV, film, book etc, a very prominent celebrity, and he still travels the world for conventions

Movie-era Shat looks better in a TOS uniform than I expected.

Oh in the SNL Restaurant sketch? I had this made last month, a 'what if' scene for ST Beyond. Shatner, yes, he does look different:

Well... I think it was the fact that he knew they wanted to kill off the character, and I think he wanted Kirk to have a heroic death. It was a passing of the torch film. I always felt that killing Kirk was a huge mistake. They should have just found a way in the story to return him to his proper timeline.

They should have left the TOS crew out of the film altogether....
