What if Voyager Was a larger ship

"Won't you join me on my falling apart spaceship that gets attacked by aliens who outgun us on a regular basis?"
"How much do you pay?"
"I'm from a society with no money. No one on this ship gets paid."
I think I know why he didn't pick any alien crew up along the way.

Ransom may have had it harder, but he could have played it smarter. Retreat, repair, and try to recruit other aliens willing to help.
Repairing the Equinox could be accomplished in a number of ways.. even with half the crew gone. It may not run perfect, but it would be able to restore all of its systems eventually... especially if repairs and maintenance were delegated to automation. That would have been a perfect opportunity for Ransom to bypass SF protocols and manage without half his crew.

Also, Janeway picked up both Kes and Neelix without paying them, and Neelix was initially a die hard trader who wanted 'payment' in exhange for information.
Plus, the Equinox likely carried some things that would be useful for trading.

Its a shame the Equinox was destroyed...
Chakotay or Tuvok could have easily commanded it, and some crew could have transferred from Voyager onto it.

Voyager was in working order, and Neelix was impressed enough by the replicators to decide it was worth the lack of paycheck. Add on top of that the ship held its own against the Kazon, and it's a reasonably good idea to try to join this crew. A smaller ship that's falling apart, is constantly under attack, has no working replicators, doesn't even have a holodeck, has already suffered 75% crew losses, and there's no paycheck? That's not attracting anyone.

I have always felt Neelix stayed largely because Kes wanted to and she stayed because, as she put it, she wanted to be like Janeway poking her head into every little mystery she could find. 7 was forced. No one else in 7 years took up the offer. Not the best indicator of success.

Neelix also may have seen it as an opportunity for himself for safety and stability. It was also pure luxury compared to what he had

Neelix' bath reminds me of something from Dr. Suess, but I can't remember what.

I bet they could simply replicate DQ money. If they could mine dilithium, they could mine gold, or platinum, or any other precious minerals. Even Archer was able to resequence(whatever that means) platinum from the something something manifold conduits into highly valued liquid platinum to pay off an industrious slaver.

With the range and technology of a ship like Voyager, they could be filthy stinking rich in the Delta Quadrant.

Neelix did trading for Voyager, and it would be easy to see him making a nice personal profit in the process.

Just a reasonable commission.

They did that when necessary. In Random Thoughts they were carrying around local money which is assumed to be replicated

Right… now I'm picturing Janeway not wanting to commit to the effort of actually capturing that con crew from live fast and prosper and simply buying them off by giving them more (replicated) money than they could hope to gain by conning for the next 10 years….

Would janeway's randomly fluxuating morals allow for counterfeiting?

The crew would have to be paid something so they could buy personal items wherever they docked. I'm sure they tried to trade for local currency but might, on occasion, have to replicate something. No different I suppose than replicating parts and selling them. I'm sure they were discrete about it so as not to impact the economy too severely when they found it necessary.
