I don't get this idea of "leakage". The transporter MUST be 100% correct. There's no margin for error. Because if there are always some errors introduced, there would be a limit on how many times you can be transported before you started to suffer physical issues... if not death.

That's the point I'm making exactly. In normal circumstances it should work perfectly but on how many occasions are there overloads, interference, or malfunctions? Kirk's request to 'boost your matter gain' fits with the concept that the system can plug the gaps. Maybe that's one of the three redundancies?

Our bodies replace our cells naturally and cell rejuvenation can be boosted artificially so any replicated cells could be subsequently replaced by the body with no ill effects unless you are a pile of goo. People might be placed on restricted transporter duty during this period.

I'm just trying to work out how transporter doubles can show up, including some with different personalities.

And the practice was done in ancient societies and even into the 20th century, probably because the proverbial rudder sticking out slowed momentum, creating a certain disadvantage for some more than others, and nobody wanted to acknowledge, much less address it... /pun
