What if they make Khan a good guy?

Noting that Khan & Co didn't just toss a coin during 'Space Seed' to decide if they would be Nasty or Nice. Their ways of dealing with obstacles, and their attitude towards non-Augments, were obviously well and truly established before Enterprise found them.

It is well to talk about "alternate realities". But, in this case, the events and choices that "made" Khan & Co happened well before 'Botany Bay' left Earth. If you want to explore alternatives, that is fine, but you have to make allowance for what happened before the divergance in history.

I have mixed feelings about using Khan again, but if they did, I am fine with making it very different.

WHo is to say the Botnay Bay is still floating around? It could have been diverted or found 25 years earlier when the Kelvan was destoyed and split occurred.

How about Khans ship got diverted and made planet fall on the Magna Roma planet and he gets his wish to be a ceasar? How about he lands on the Sigma Iota gangster plaent and he the godfather:cool:

With 20+ years on one of these planets he would have time to implement his programs. You could have another ship crash there 5 years earlier and Khan reverse engineer a ship or two of his own.

If you want him as a "good guy", have him be the lesser of two evils- he could help the E against the Klingons

Just a guess, but if they are going for Khan, and indeed del Toro was a candidate, then they were probably going for a Khan that was newly awakened. That's just judging by the actors' ages. Obviously they could change a lot of that though, or even use something like age makeup. Given this team's penchant for flashbacks, I wouldn't totally rule that out.

Then again... Prime Spock, remembering what happened, could eventually find Jim and NuSpock again and tell them that should they encounter the Botany Bay... "Destroy it. There is no Mount Selaya now. Spock... should you wish to survive without undergoing Fal-Tor-Pan, do as I suggest. Khan is as troubled as Nero. And Jim... use protection."

I'd love it if Khan became an ally and mentor to Kirk and used his enhanced abilities to fight alongside Kirk against some terrible menace... only to betray his new friend and steal the Enterprise in the final moments of the film.

For the record, I don't want Khan in the movie, but I know it's inevitable he will be in this one or future installments, so at least it'd be nice to bring him back in an interesting way.

Well, Khan as a good guy would completely shatter his character, wouldn't it?
Like Beyond Antares, I don't support the return of Khan either, but if he returns, he really should be done properly.

What if Khan remained a villian, but due to strained circumstances, was the only (or most likely) hope for salvation? What if Khan and his rogues held the key to saving the Federation? Would it be worth working together with a former tyrant -- and can a former tyrant ever really change or do good? That would be an interesting angle to explore for another look at Khan.

I'll stand by what I also said about the previous film before its release: it won't be as much the same as those on one end want and it won't be as different as those on the other end want.

I think it would be a dramatic waste to have Khan be the good guy in anything beyond his own point of view or his followers. He's a vallain, with or without shades of gray, and I'm sure Robert Ocri et al would write him as such. He couldn't have the same exact motivation as in TWOK, so this would be the chance to do something different with him.

While I hope they use the new continuity to write new stories, it might be interesting to see the old characters in a new light. A new Khan would have some things in common with the old one, but there would be some differences too. Both Khans were augments on Earth. Both Khans were dictators who fell and were exiled in the Botany Bay. But the new Khan hasn't met Kirk. He was not defeated when he tried to take the ship. He never fell in love with Marla McGivers. He did not see her die and blame Kirk for her death. In short, new Khan is not the revenge-obsessed man that old Khan became. It could be interesting if done well.

There is that.

I have concerns that, whatever else happens, the script will basically straitjacket him into becoming Captain Ahab - again ("It Is Your Destiny.", etc.). Worked well in TWOK, but hopefully they will try for a different villain-style this time.
