You need to put yourself in the place of a writer in the mid-60's. The century Star Trek is in, that's your optimistic future. While 2011 probably looks nothing like it does right now. Communist states had nuclear weapons and no fear of using them. Scientists seeking to improve the human race, without moral/religious arguments over stem cells, biological experiments, clones and the like hampering their efforts. A very different and frightening place, to make current economic recession look like happy days frankly.

Unless you're talking about the recast Abramsverse - in which case, they're probably doing their own "Assignment: Earth" right now I shouldn't wonder. Wandering around on a visit to La-la-land (a place totally divorced from this reality anyway), Spock getting Obama's autograph and Kirk stocking up on old school internet porn, to help him cope with the loneliness of command.

He was known in the future only as the "Mysterious O-Man," because like ancient egyptian pharaohs who fell into disfavor, all evidence of his existance was removed. Subsequent leaders spent years methodically undoing all that the O-Man had written.

Once it was gone, every bit of it ... there was utopia across the land.
