Interesting question. I believe Andrew Probert had anticipated this encounter (which would be inevitable in deep space) while designing the Enterprise-D.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the concept sketch in question involved the main deflector dish hinging to the side to allow two manipulator arms to deploy from the resultant opening. Said arms were equipped with boxing gloves, the only weapon capable of taking on such a foe.
