What if JJ. Abrams had done Trek X?

Next Gen had run it's course. Ridley Scott couldn't have made an interesting next Gen film. I always found it and Voyager to be terribley god aweful boring which is a shame because Patrick Stewart is a hell of an actor and does swashbuckler quite well just not in TNG (see Dune and Excalabur) but the show was also limited but it's over the top left wing view, kindergarten on a feet battleship, bland alien of the week in grey or tan linen robes with a different nose appliance. Other than the Borg which was really their only effective villain (Voyager ruined BTW) which translated to the big screen. Where TOS was more american Pie , fistfights and creepy aliens. Much wider appeal

In 30 years you Next Genny fans will get your reboot no worries

TNG does not needa reboot. If you allow yourselves to go down that route, where will you stop? Reboot everything made under the Star Trek name? Waste of time instead of doing something original.

I do think reboots are the way things will be for the forseeable future. I wouldn't be surprised if Star Trek XIV is a reboot of either TNG or once again TOS.

Kirk/Spock/McCoy: great characters, plus archetypes of head and heart united in Kirk. Scotty: danged good character. So, iconic, yes.

TNG was good TV for its time, but not timeless/great. Characters? Picard great, as played by Sir Patrick. All others: annoying to bland meh to maybe "good" (Worf imo). Just don't see Paramount profit-driven corporation rebooting that.

CaptMatt, I'm with you in spirit. Do new stuff.

Zachary Quinto might not have been well known enough to land an audition for Spock. His casting is the single most important successful element of Trek XI.
Certainly, he played an important part in contributing to the film's overall success - an inspired stroke of casting! However, I do feel the movie probably would've been every bit as successful with another well cast actor in the role. It's very much a case of many elements adding up to a terrific whole for me.

Thanks Plynch, I appreciate the support. New and original is the way to go, something Hollywood needs reminding of.

I also think you have to look at the age of the actors. People, esp. young people want to see other young people in action/adventure films. They want to see sexy movie stars, not older TV personalities.
Has this ever been proven outside of some weird self-fulfilling prophecy in which studios think that to be the case so they go out of their way to ensure that it is the case?

There are plenty of older, shall we say mature, actors in movies and there always has been as much a draw to their films as those with younger, prettier casts.

A TNG reboot would never do the original show justice. TNG had a terrific cast with top notch writers. Paramounts priority should be preserving the show for future generations (which they are doing by remastering it for blu ray), not trying to remake something that is already perfect.
Long live Picard and the crew of the ENT-D.

Make it so! I agree 100%, Admiral Screed.
